Default Gastric sleeve 22 years post off

    Hello All!
Thank you for letting me join this forum. I'm hoping to make new friends as well as compare notes on our weight loss journeys. I've had soooo many ups and downs since my surgery and often wonder, am I alone. I want to share as much as possible and learn as much as possible. I had my surgery at 276lbs. I am 5'2''. i went all the way down to 119, but have since gained and can maintain between 130 to 145. I am comfy at that weight. Currently Im over because of the holidays, but can lose it quickly when I put my head to it. However it has been abattle the whole time with vomiting and GERDS. Does anyone else out there still experience these things. Please help me...

Yes, it's been that long. I actually had the staples. No scope back then. Which did you have?

Welcome! and Congratulations on your long term weight loss!

I did read that first sleeve gastrectomies were performed in the 1990's, but I have never actually read about how they are doing now.

I hope you can share about your experience with us newbies.

    Thank you for posting!
22 years ago, wow!!! that's a really interesting perspective about weight regain and reflux!!!

I'm sorry that you are still vomiting and having GERD.

I'm almost one year out and gradually tried to stop the PPI I take to help with reflux. I had a light reflux before surgery, didn't take medication and actually the surgeon told me about it after my pre-op exams I didn't even know I had it, I was just sensitive to spice and tea and when avoiding those I was fine.
Post-op reflux was really bad so I took 30 mg lansoprazole for a few months, lowered to 15 mg and right now take it every two or three days. I hope to stop it at some point.

Vomiting: besides thee days of vomiting non stop right after the surgery, I've been lucky so far.
Do you know why and when the vomiting happen? is it triggered by a kind of food, quantity or eating too fast or you can't know why?

May be starting a journal about your food intake (when, what, quantity, if you are stressed ..) could help?

Do you still see a surgeon today? for post-op every year and blood test? may be he could give you some clues of what is going on. This field, bariatric surgery, does move fast. They improve techniques and have new studies every year...a good surgeon could be a big help.
    Take care

The sleeve, which sounds similar, as we sleevers had staples too. But I didn't think the sleeve was around 22 years ago. Sounds like you have had amazing success, congratulations! I would see you doctor for help with the vomiting and GERDS. Seems odd after all those years...

I'm glad to hear from someone who is so far out post op. I don't think I have seen anyone who was sleeved that long ago on any of these forums ever.
As far as the vomiting and GERD goes, did you have a chance to ask your surgeon about it? Did they ever do an endoscopy to look at your throat and stomach? If not, I would definitely suggest to ask for an endoscopy to see if the reason this is happening could be a fixable problem such as a stricture that could be dilated or maybe a hiatal hernia.

Thx for all the comments! I decided to go back to basics just to see if I could modify my eating. Well, so far so good. I guess we can be our own worst enemies some time. If I stick to very small meals, I do fine. It just hard to tell when that last bite is sometimes! LOL I do still belch a lot. Always have. But after 22yrs, I have discovered Gas-X, go figure. I also find that a low carb and sugar do much better for me. Thanks again!

    Glad you are finding solutions!

Have you maintained near or at your goal weight for the past 22 years?

What have been your key tools (I like calling them "anchors" or "pillars") for success so far?

    What are you proudest of?

    What has changed overtime?

I have gone up and down a lot. But these are my fault. I don't know about the rest of you, but while I may be able to eat 2ozs of chicken and be full, I can easily down a gallon of ice cream in one sitting. I was always told it is a tool to help. After 5 years, many people will plateau and gain back a percentage of their weight. I've seen it a lot. However it can be lost and maintained. We use to call the first couple years are "HONEYMOON". Then the real work begins.

I do not see a surgeon. I just recently moved and do plan on getting a scope done this year. Just to see what kind of damage I may have done. You're so right about the changing times. I had 47 staples from my belly button to my breast bone. Foods that I use to eat, I couldn't no more and then foods I wasn't able to eat I could. That was one of my biggest challenges.Even a bite of something would make me vomit. I'm still learning. One day I can have pizza, next day I can't. It's been a weird ride. I can tell you this though, there has never been one sweet I couldn't eat. And when you're hungry and nothing else works, you go for them. That's how I got myself in trouble. I changed ice cream for real fruit smoothies and things like that.
