    Default Hi there

    Hi,
Just posting a quick introduction. I am currently in the process of getting gastric sleeve surgery. My insurance requires a 6 month supervised weight loss program, and my 6 month visit will be in early January. So, hopefully I will be able to have my surgery in February or March. I'm doing alright with some of the changes I have made, but I haven't really lost much weight yet (so much for supervised weight loss, LOL).
I'm so ready for this lifestyle change. Although I am relatively young (31), I have numerous health problems and take many medications. I have had high blood pressure for years, I also suffer from GERD, depression, arthritis, and more. I was also recently diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes. This was a real slap in the face, as I totally did this to myself! How many people in their 30's get diabetes? I am so sick and tired of being sick and tired. Right now, I only have to test my blood sugar a few times a week, and it's always been within the ranges my doctor wants. I also take an oral med to help.
I'm sure I will post questions soon, as I have a lot of them!
My biggest dilemma right now is actually telling friends, family, and co-workers that I am going to be having the surgery. I'm not ashamed to have it, but I don't want people to know and then judge me. Not sure if others have felt this way or not. But, I do have a pretty good support system of friends and family.
Wishing everyone a Happy and Healthy New Year!
    D618

Welcome... I had my surgery December 12th. Before I had the surgery I debated on telling people especially my twin sister and mother. They worry, and would use the internet to look up every rotten detail they could find to discourage me. So I didn't tell them, I am lucky in the fact they do not live close. I told my co workers because I took a week off from work. I must say the hardest part about the surgery was the pre-opp liquid diet. I caught myself several times wondering if it was worth it. Now that I am 3 weeks past surgery and I am able to eat soft foods, I have never felt better. I have lost 34 lbs and feeling better every day. I am now so happy that I had the surgery and told my mother and sister. It is very obvious that I have lost wait and enjoying each loss of each pound. Hang in there and remember you have to do what is best for you and no one else. Good luck.

Welcome D618! I was also on a 6 month supervised program to get insurance approval. Well worth it. I also have only told a handful of people. My dad and sister. My husband and kids. And 4 close friends. I have not told my husband's family or people from work. When I was out for surgery I told them it was for my hiatal hernia and ulcer. So it was really only a lie by omission as I really did have surgery for the hernia and the ulcer was cut away with my excess stomach. But I get it. I am totally not ashamed but people are so judgmental. Also, my sister had the surgery 5 years ago and was very open about it. People who knew always felt the need to tell her when they felt like she was getting too skinny or tell her to eat more. Um...you physically cannot force yourself to do that. I follow my diet exactly as I am told to. Every surgeon/nutritionist has different after care and rules. Mine has me low carb with a list of foods I can eat in abundance, in moderation, and those to avoid. It is really helpful for me to have that visual reminder of what I should and should not be eating. I am very happy with my results and that I did this. You are going to love all that this does for you. Just remember it is a tool and you need to follow the rules. Be accountable and mindful. You will still need to work your tool. But you are going to lose weight for the first time in an easy manner. It is almost unbelievable. Do not compare yourself to others. We all lose at different rates. Remember to take measurements and pictures weekly or every other week to track progress. The scale is not always moving even when you are still losing inches. Make sure you see what your surgeon/nutritionist recommend for your vitamin regiment. We are not able to get all we need with food alone because of our small tummies. If you have any questions reach out!

Not sure I understand the not telling people for fear of judgement. I felt judged before hand everyday. Riding the train or the subway, nobody wants to sit next to the fat guy. People looking at your shopping cart, etc. Don't worry about judgement, its your life and you are taking control. Be proud that you were aware enough to make this call. Out of the close to 18 million people who qualify for the surgery, only about 200k choose this path. It is the most effective short and long term method to fight obesity.

Be proud of yourself because you are willing to fight.
