Default Possible Pleateau Early in Post-op

I am 24 day post op. As of 14 days post op I was given the green light to exercise as long as I felt comfortable. Since such time I have been going to the gym. I do 2 miles or 30 mins between a 3.5 – 4.2 speed. After all this work I feel like I have plateaued. I have not stepped on a scale because I was becoming obsessed with the numbers and it was driving me crazy. I go to my 1 month post op appt next week and Im curious to see how I am doing. I am eating all the right things protein, vitamins, water and veggies. Im starting to get discouraged. I think I need to weight train… that should help the weight loss along. Has anyone else plateaued early and how did you overcome it? I know that was a lot of info but im starting to panic. lol

Look up the "3 week stall" on Google. I'd say that 90 percent of weight loss surgery patients stall or plateau starting at around the third postoperative week. The stall could last for weeks.

As long as you stay hydrated, consume a minimum of 60+ grams of protein, and take your supplements as directed, the stall will pass and you will start losing again. But for now, stay the hell off the scale...

    Good luck to you!

I'm 5 weeks post-op, and by week 2 I felt like I was stalling. Write down your weight today, and wait at least a week to compare. I felt like I was going up and down the same 2 pounds. My whole adult life, 260 lbs. has been my plateau (I've never got below it in 14 years). Last Friday to today I'm down 1.6 lbs ( 256.6 to 255), but going on the scale daily (and multiple times a day at that) makes me think it's not budging. I get depressed about it, but my husband likes to remind me that at least the scale isn't going in the other direction. I think that's important to remember, yet easy to forget: we aren't gaining weight anymore.

    High Weight: 300
    Starting Weight: 282
    Day of Surgery: 273
    1 Month: 256.6 (-16.4 lbs)
    2 Month: 246.6 (-10.0 lbs)
    3 Month: 238.0 (-8.6 lbs )
    4 Month: 233.8 (-4.2 lbs)
    5 Month: 227.8 (-6.0 lbs)
    6 Month: 224.0 (-3.8 lbs)
    7 Month: 223.0 (-1.0 lb )
    8 Month: 219.6 (-3.4 lbs)
    9 Month: 220.2 (+0.6 lbs)
    Current: 208.4

    Down 64.6 lbs since surgery

I'm 17 days post op and my weight has already stalled. First week I was losing 2 pounds a day and then nothing since. My office states this is normal. When I first started losing weight I was weighing daily, now it's going to be once a week. The nurse at my office also had the same procedure and when she wan't losing weight she noticed she was losing inches. I feel like that's happening to me now. The weight is redistributing right now. I'm not losing on the scale but my pants are looser. Remember many don't get to their goal weight for a year so it's a long process. And as RockyPeaches said at least we aren't gaining weight anymore! Keep at it and don't lose hope!

Thanks for the encouragement. Im off the scale for now. Waiting until my 1 month post op appt. I started looking at things differently. The scale may be reading one thing but my clothes are still getting loose. So I know im doing something right.

I plateaued in my 4th week and then week 5 I started losing again. I'm just now at 20lbd lost since surgery and Thursday will be 6 weeks. I take weekly pics and take measurements every 2 weeks. I've also found that eating too little stalls my weight loss or even makes me go up slightly. I don't lose full lbs at a time usually. Presumably bc I'm a lower weight? I can see my clothes are bigger and I've lost inches.

We all plateau at some point. I followed the advice given by several of the veterans on here. This is what I learned from them . . . I weigh and measure on my monthly surgiversaries and record it. You can see this on my blog. I weigh myself on Thursdays to keep from obsessing. For example, this month I recorded my weight on the 13th. Thursday I got on the scale, like I normally do and had lost .6 of a pound, my guess is if I got on today I would be up slightly. This used to make me crazy so now I weigh myself weekly. The first 3 months I only weighed in at the doctors office. Hope this idea helps.

    ✨Time✨

You have taken one major step to stop weight gain, now as long as you follow a nutrient dense diet plan and lower, stop or mofify your sugar and fat intake (fried and sugary foods lacking substance) you will lose weight.

I have been tracking my weight for a long time and as you will see in the attached graph that since my surgery on May 17, 2016 it has been on a downward slope, despite stalls and gains my weight has come off, though slower than the average WLS patient. Even when my weight seemed to go nowhere, I was dropping dress/clothes sizes. I'm fluctuating between 173/176 and I am wearing size 10/medium and 12/medium in other some brands that is from 18/20 seven months ago.

    IMG_1272.PNG

So just let ✨time✨ pass and trust that your sleeve is working (as long as you are not eating around it) the weight will drop when your body is ready to release it. Don't worry about stalls or small tiny gains it's just your body way of adjusting to your new way of eating and living.

I plateaued as well week 3 and week 5, but just keep on keeping on. Do your thing and forget about it. It will happen. Don't stress.
I'm almost 10 months out and have lost 103 pounds and regained my confidence. Just hang in there.

You'll need to provide more information if you want constructive help/tips. What are you eating? Are you exercising? How many grams of protein do you consume per day? Are you consuming at least 60 ounces of water daily?

I consume 100 to 120 grams of protein per day, a minimum of 60 ounces of fluids per day (either water or unsweetened iced tea), and 2000+ calories per day to maintain my body weight of 118 to 120 pounds.

Without adequate protein and water intake, the scale will probably not budge for you.

I also run 20+ miles per week and lift heavy weights 3 times a week. Exercise enables me to have more freedom with food choices and keeps my calorie burn high. I also have a desk job, by the way...
