Are you referring to a urinary catheter? I did not need to have one placed. After all, my surgical procedure was only 30 minutes long. In general, only the longer surgeries require placement of a catheter.

They did have a urinary catheter put in for me but they put it in while I was under and took it out right after before I woke up. Once I was awake I was then on pain meds so didn't notice a thing.

I didn't have one. The surgery doesn't take very much time so I'm not sure one would be needed. Some people, me included, had a drain in the stomach to drain the blood. They removed it right before I was released. There was pain as it was being removed but then that was it. No more problems after it came out. All in all I didn't have much pain and the pain pump in the hospital helped a lot. Once home I only took like 2-3 pain pills at night to help me sleep. I never had gas pain either but I had my gas strips just in case. Good luck!

As far as I know, and of course it will depend on your particular surgeon, it is NOT common at all to have to have a urinary catheter for a Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy (VSG). They are very short surgeries and it's not needed.

Also, most people say that the only pain they have is the gas in the abdomen/chest/shoulder area the day/night of surgery and then they were fine. Also, most of those who did have the gas said walking helped tremendously, or prevented the pain almost entirely.

    Hope that helps

Between the laproscopic incisions, being filled with gas, cutting and stapling your stomach, and (possibly) having a drain put in, having a urinary catheter placed or not is going to be the LEAST of your worries as far as pain goes. Definitely not something I'd be concerned about.

We do not routinely use catheters at our hospital for bariatric surgery. I agree with Kindle, the gas is the real "pain." Good luck and you're going to love this journey!

As a guy, the cath was one of feared items too. It was my first so I had idea what to expect. The fact that it was there was no problem because I was out when it went in. However, I was awake when it came out. It was the least of the problems I had. It stung a bit when it came out but it was better than the incisions.
