    Default The need to feed.

Hello everyone, I'had the sleeve done 5 days ago. I did the 2 day liquid diet before surgery. Then I was on only Ice chips the day of surgery and the next day. So now 3 days of liquid diet again. My stomach is growling constantly. I feel like Im starving to death. I'm soo hungry. The doctor said liquids only. But Im now having jello, and some soup trying to fill the sleeve. I feel like I'm constantly just drinking all day. Even had a few bites of mashed potatoes today. Its really hard.

All I can say it buck up buttercup. I was on liquids for over a month. It's just part of the process and a very very small period of time compared to the rest of your life. Of course you're hungry....but feeling hungry never killed anyone. And you are far from starving to death....over 50kg away from starving to death. BTW, you will never feel full until you get to solids. And you shouldn't aim for feeling full anyways, that's how we all got fat in the first place. Drinking all day is normal and what you should be doing right now. Anything it takes to get 60-80g protein and 100+ ounces of water.

If you are having trouble following your surgeon's guidelines this early out (when not dong so is literally life threatening) I hope you will consider seeking therapy. As hard as this seems to you now, maintenance is going to be a LOT harder if you aren't totally committed and address your addiction sooner than later.

Good luck. Embrace the liquid diet...it is the path to the new you.

You need to keep drinking until you reach the soft food stage. What does your guideline say? I guess your doc didn't advise for mashed potatoes at five days right? can you have protein shakes instead? but most important are you taking your PPI? because growling stomach could be acid reflux...
The first month is really important, it's the healing part and you need to really follow your guideline, because you don't want to go to the ER. Call your surgeon if you can't follow your post-op diet. May be you need to meet the nutritionist for some help?

    Hi Shannoll,

I too am hungry and am 7 days post-op. I had liquids for 2 weeks pre-op and will now be 4 weeks before eating full solids (that's 6 weeks if your counting!). I have to agree with Kindle when I say that you probably should be getting some support right now in helping you deal with this. From everything I have read and everything I have heard, it is literally life threatening to be eating solid food right now. You can easily poke a hole through the stomach sleeve which could kill you. Yes, you are hungry. So am I. But think of those sounds of your stomach growling as a good thing. Think of those sounds as the body shrinking. It is a huge commitment to have this operation but I hope that you clearly understood that it is only a tool. You will have to do the hard work. Try filling up your time doing other things. Right now I am doing little things like doing crafts and some small painting projects. It will help change your focus. Don't get me wrong..It will still be hard. I'm bored of liquids and trying to mix things up as much as I can (turns out tomato soup heated with half milk and then 1/4 cup plain greek yogurt is pretty tasty!) but it isn't easy...We've all done easy..That is why we are in the situation that we are in. Stay the course, get some help and good luck!

Thumbs up Re: The need to feed.

Thank you so much ladies! I'm getting ready to have surgery and it helps so much to hear this and what to expect! I myself would rather hear my stomach growl for a little bit than have to have my knees replaced at 60 or have to start taking insulin shots. That's where I'm at right now, I'm so tired all the time, I don't even have the energy to wait on my family. That's part of how I show my love for my family, wait on them, fix their plate, and bring them their food. I enjoy it, it's something my mother did for me and I loved it. I love doing their laundry, I like them to know they are loved when I take the care to wash, dry, and put their clothes away. When they take out good smelling shirt to put on, I know they think of me. They thank me and tell me how much they appreciate me, and it shows. I never have to ask for the trash to be taken out or the dishes to be done. But lately I'm so physically tired, I'm having a hard time doing what I love, my family is my motivation. I want to be around for awhile and more than that, to be around and be healthy for myself and my family. I'm going to be a grandmother for the first time very soon, sometime in December. I can't wait and I want to have the energy to be "that kind of grandma," you know the one that does everything with their grandchildren. I'm looking so forward to my new thin, energetic self! I want to be all I can be for myself, my future husband, my daughter, my step-son, and my little grandbaby Knox when he gets here. I'm going to do this, and I'm not going to let 6 weeks of liquids and hunger or slider foods get in my way later! Shannoll girl, you can do this! I have faith in you! Focus on the positive and stay strong! Big, big hugs!

This is why I love this forum. It is no nonsense. We have the sleeve, we have a goal to lose weight, get healthier, move more, eat less, be happier. But sometimes we hit a bump and have to hear that we should not feel sorry for ourselves, keep going, drink more liquids, it all works out. Every void cannot be filled with food. Yes, we're hungry, whether in our brain or actually in our stomach, but we're NOT starving! Far from it. Thanks for the answers to Shannoll because they helped me today too.

I did a 2 week liquid pre op diet (with a cheat day in the middle...oops) then some post op time on liquids...I don't remember how long. I jumped into soft/solids too fast. Didn't cause any problems, but when I realized that it takes about 6 weeks for our poor open tummy wounds to heal, I got back on track and babied my tiny tummy.

I was one of the lucky ones that didn't experience true hunger....just head hunger, which, to me, is worse. It's easy to stop the true hunger. Not so easy to stop the head hunger.

One more thing I will mention -- if your stomach is growling constantly and you feel "hungry" you may be dealing with an excess of stomach acid and need to be on a PPI. If you are already on a PPI, you may need a stronger one or a larger dose.
--sleeve surgery tends to result in excess stomach acid, especially in the first few months post-op
--excess stomach acid symptoms include growling stomach and a feeling of hunger
    Good luck!

I felt hungry too but it was just the acid reflux I was having. The Prilosec really helped me. Now I have my small pureed meals and shakes and I'm fine.

Thank you to the ladies that mentioned the acid reflux. Im making sure that I keep up on my PPI which definitely was the problem. I was like a weird cramping feeling, and the only thing that helped was keeping my sleeve full. Now on the meds its helped so much. Thanks for your kind advise.

You're very welcome! I'm glad you are feeling better.
I had a light reflux before surgery, but it became bad after. And I had the cramp feeling...I could only lower my PPI dosage after six months. We are all different but at least a few things can help manage reflux. Have your dinner at least 2 hours before bed time. I try not to drink too much either before lying down.
There's some teas, spices that I can't have right now. Also when you will start soft food, try one new type of food at one time. I can't have cruciferous veggies (broccoli, cauliflower) they make me really sick.
