    Default Constipation ??

Hi. I am wondering if anyone who has had surgery had constipation after surgery? I had surgery 9/22/16, and have NOT had a normal bowel movement....like not at all!! My last BM was 10/27/16 (I take notes) and that was due to two laxatives and lots of prayers, and I felt like I needed to go bad. I do not feel bloated, do not feel pain, I pass gas normally (hehe), sometimes I feel like I have to go, but just pass gas and I feel better. I have tried to eat prunes, drink prune juice, am putting benefiber in my water, I am eating/drinking 60-80 grams of protein daily, drinking at least 50-60 oz of water. I am not sure what is going on. I don't really want to go to a dr. unless it is urgent (since my insurance sucks and would have to pay for everything they do to me....)

Anyone have any ideas? Advice? I am not sure if I should start to get worried.

For me it has usually been the opposite (because I have IBS)....but I still had a few episodes of constipation since the sleeve, especially because of one medication I was taking....constipation didn't happen that often for almost 20 years!
So I took Senna tea. It does work well on me. I also did eat prunes and that did work too.
Almost two weeks without BM that's way too long...try to drink more water. Try the tea and see what happen.
Also many people here also take milk of magnesia and it does seem to work for them. I never tried it but just taking magnesium tablets can have that effect on me.
If nothing is happening you should contact you surgeon and see what he says about it. good luck! take care!

Oh you poor thing. I didn't have a normal one until I started back on somewhat regular food. I am doing okay now and my surgery was about a week after yours. I did see someone post that he was taking Benefiber. I copied his post and added it to my "desktop. This is what he wrote: "

Since the surgery I've been on the looser and more frequent side of the aisle when it some to BMs. At my 6 month followup the doctor suggested Benefiber. He said it works the best for sleevers. Wow has this product has been great for me. Two huge positives. #1 - I don't go near as much as I use to. And #2 (haha - #2) - when I go it so much more normal.

I'm not even taking the full dose which is three a day. I just put one dose in my morning protein shake and that's all I need.

So - just sharing in case anyone else is having this type of issue."

I don't remember who posted it to give credit but you can probably search benefiber and find it.

Constipation is on the biggest side effects of the surgery...Id get some magnesium Citrate...it's a liquid. Im 8 months out and take one stool softener everyday to keep things going.

Per my Bariatric "team" (my go-to), and suggested here...Miralax in the short term, Benefiber daily thereafter.

I hope you find a solution soon. I was grateful to get back to normal...

Best of luck as you continue your journey!

I'm about 2 weeks shy of my one year anniversary, and I still take colace (actually, the Target version) daily. If I miss a day or two, things get uncomfortable backed up, and when that happens, I take Miralax. Both the colace and miralax are at my doctors suggestion, and they work for me.

I had one severe bout of constipation about a week after surgery. I had not gone at all and it was painful and scary. Since that time, I take a daily Colace and if I do get backed up in the future, Miralax until I go. I am so far only on soft foods, but already see the consistency changing, so I'm not giving up the Colace until I'm sure I'll be ok.

I was going every three days after surgery and then it went to five days. I freaked out and my Dr. Said it was normal and to start taking a stool softner. When that didn't work I used the Magnesium Citrate and HALLELUJAH I finally went!
