I just had my surgery yesterday. I couldn't drink anything but today I drank alll of my broth, tea, water, and ice pop. I'm literally hungry! I'm still in the hospital of course but I feel like if I were home I'd be able to eat a cheeseburger!

Oh, that stinks! Maybe you can break a bone in a few months, so you can try the menu? LOL.

Remember also that everyone has slider foods that seem to pass right through allowing you to eat more. I prefer to eat my protein now (at least some of it) and I'm 3 weeks 3 days out. I feel it fills me up faster and it's not like I can eat that much. Also, my nutritionist said to remember to eat slowly allowing your body time to react to feeling full. I know if I eat to quickly it'll make my stomach hurt because inevitably I've most likely over eaten. And I agree we all have to find what works for us.

believe me u can't eat a cheeseburger, at 4 weeks out, real solids still feel like they hit you in the gut if u don't take very small bites, chew 25 times and especially more than a tablespoon

Alright, folks, I'm 5 years post op and still don't eat a whole cheeseburger and I don't eat the roll either I know food, especially when you can't eat it yet, is tempting and the thought sounds yummy; but the beginning is a good start to begin to adopt new ideas, feelings, etc. around foods. The hunger you feel right after surgery is usually only "head hunger". The first 30 days after surgery is all about healing and getting yourself "in the zone" for success. Practice other ways to deal with the "hunger" or obsessions about food, fill your day with other activities and it's going to be enough of a challenge to even get in enough liquids in the beginning. In our hospital, we find the most successful post op patients are the ones who begin to adopt new behaviors right from the beginning.
Continued success, and you're going to love this journey!

I am definitely having trouble eating carbs - which is a very good thing (even if it makes me a little sad). The slider foods is true for me - I can eat a lot of the things that aren't so great, which is dangerous...but I've been trying to stay away from those things as much as possible. I will grab something high in protein to stop myself from eating the bad things. It's definitely a process....

yep basically you will be able to eat anything- 4 weeks out though?? personally i wasnt able to ,but about this time i had major hunger issues which i did not have BEFORE surgery... i guess bc i was always stuffing myself... i could eat 3 meals now i eat like 6 small ones... so i just have to be careful and "graze" on hi protien no cal foods so to speak

iam a year out and only half way to my goal... so i can eat anything pretty much.. spicy, and veggies still mess me up ,but i eat them
one thing i stay away from tho is MILK and i do a Little bit of cream. This is magic like we all most thought.. its a tool, that can be abused and used the wrong way... we can still gain weight and still NOT lose... we still have to fight for it just like anyone else who didnt have the surgery!

    First goal 295- 4-11-16

Second goal 265 - 8-15-16 (that took forever lol halfway there!)

    3rd goal 200 -

    ATLAST final goal 165-

Hey, slow and steady wins the race, right?! (at least that's what I keep telling myself lol)

I haven't had trouble eating anything, except carby things make me full very quickly...so I've been trying to keep way down on carbs.

Dense protein = chicken, fish, meat, eggs, cheese. If you're a vegetarian (I'm not), then that's a whole other thing that includes beans and legumes of all kinds.

Serious question: Are y'all not getting this kind of information from your surgeon and his/her team?

Ann, I was thinking the same thing. Starting to think about food and what you "wish" or what foods you're craving is not the healthiest mindset for the journey. I suggest that you think about what you want this journey to be like in order to be successful, what you might want to accomplish, what you want to look like; too much "food thoughts" are setting you up for a more difficult time. This is just my honest opinion and believe me; I realize it's easier for me to say this now that I'm 5 1/2 years out and can eat foods, but I do remember not trying to think about food in the beginning and concentrating on moving from one doctor recommended phase to another. For me, it was a challenge to even swallow water

Please fellow bariatric patients, follow the guidelines of your program and move forward thinking about the reasons you even went through surgery. Continued success to all!

That loud growling sound isn't necessarily hunger. It could be digestive noises. Try to rely on other signs of physical hunger, like lightheadedness, shakiness, nausea, irritability or gnawing pain.
