    Default Antibiotics

I went to the dentist because a root canal I had earlier this year, in January actually, started bothering me. X-rays didn't show any problems, but it was hurting so bad on Sunday I avoided chewing anything on that side. And of course at the dentist on Tuesday everything was fine and aches or pain whatsoever. Dentist really wants me to take antibiotics just in case.

My question is for anyone who takes probiotics... wouldn't it be counterproductive to take antibiotics?

I take probiotics to help my digestive track and keep me regular, which seems to help.

I do take probiotics, but sometimes have to take antibiotics anyway....I'm wondering if you don't have a sinus infection, because if it was pain from your tooth it would show on the xray if it was an abscess....sinus infection can radiate and give the impression it's coming from your tooth..

Probiotics and antibiotics are fine. As a matter of fact everyone in my house takes them now. Especially when on antibiotics. My husband, who never gets sick, took a strong antibiotic for a staph infection and he got cdeff because it stripped both good and bad bacteria. Took months to get over it.

I just made a call to pharmacist and they said it would be no problem.

Sandra, but my tooth was really hurting/sensitive when I chewed, and yes I've had stuffy nose the last couple of days too. Too weird I tell you! Oh and my mold/leak issues at home just got worse! Last week it rained one day and the NEW wood flooring started warping. We lifted the flooring again have had fans going 24/7 to dry subfloors, condo association can't get their people to come look for source of leak for another two weeks. No kitchen sink or water until Tuesday or Wednesday. Ugh!

Donna, yikes! Okay I'm going to plan to do the probiotic 5-day jumpstart after I'm done with antibiotics.

    Thank you both!

I agree with Donna, Shirl. I take probiotics to keep my good bacteria higher than the bad. Anti-biotics tend to kill off good & bad, so you definitley need them then. But I take them daily due to my diverticulitis. It really seems to help....,..

If you have any say in it, do NOT let them give you clindamycin! This is the number one antibiotic that causes C. diff. I had a tooth root abscess 2 months after my VSG, was put on clindamycin, followed by 2 1/2 months of uncontrollable diarrhea, 3 rounds of IV fluids due yo dehydration, and a dozen visits to my PCP, a gastroenterologist and infectious disease specialist. 4 rounds of metronidazole and vancomycin (at $1000/pop) and billions and billions CFU of probiotics did nothing. Finally had to have a fecal transplant to get rid of the C. diff.

As for probiotics, make sure it is a multistrain product (at least 30+) and take them at a different time than the antibiotics, because antibiotics kill probiotics.

Kindle I'm sorry you went through that, yikes! the dentist prescribed me amoxicillin and I think that's the milder penicillin??? IDK.

I have to take it 3x/daily. I'll take probiotics before going to bed.

OhMG! I just looked up C. Diff. I'm glad that's all behind you!

After further reading I'm stopping antibiotics!!! Amoxicillin is also listed as a culprit! I'm going to call the dentist and ask for alternative treatment!

Here is an article about probiotics https://cdifffoundation.org/category/probiotics/

    Oh I'm glad I asked!

Donna, I'm glad your hubby is doing better. Which probiotics are all y'all taking? I don't know if you recall, but I started with the Garden of Life 5-day start, now just take the probiotic enzyme blend. After taking the amoxicillin for three days I think I'm going to the the 5-day again.

In the meantime, I'm going to watch tooth really carefully.

By the way, has anyone done a colonic post VSG?

Shirl, Garden of Life probiotics are an excellent choice. I also take their Vitamin Code and My Kind line of vitamins.

Donna, I too, shy away from antibiotics. I even had "no antibiotics" added to my medical alert tag. I had to fight the surgeon who removed my gall bladder tooth and nail and absolutely demand he not give me antibiotics. The gastro who did my fecal transplant flat out said he would never take them unless it was life or death. The bummer is I am a vet tech and normally a bite...especially from a cat...warrants antibiotic treatment. Believe me, makes my job a little more stressful, especially the days we work on the feral cats at the shelter!

For sure after what happen to you I do understand that you stay far away from antibiotics! Wow that was bad! I'm glad it's all over!!

I had several bad issues with antibiotics over the years, once one of my ligament almost broke and I couldn't walk properly for months (doc said that it's a really rare side effect after taking it...he had to look for it to finally agree that was the antibiotic's fault..I woke up up and couldn't walk!) and an other allergic shock after taking cipro...I can't take many kind of antibiotics but sometimes have to while fighting lungs infection or even bladder infection.
Long story short, I've been taking capsules of oregano oil to protect myself from lung infections. I started in 2011 and for five years had not one single pneumonia which is a record for me. Oregano really helped me a lot and I take it several times per year just to boost my immune system, or also when I travel in countries where I could catch the traveler diarrhea...it's an amazing prevention. I also use oregano oil mixed with tea trea to fight skin issues. May be it could help you with the cat problem?

I do avoid to take antibiotics as much as possible, had to two years ago after catching an infection In Mexico City...that was my last time. I hope I can stay away for several more years..
Antibiotics do save lifes, it did save mine several times, but at the same time the side effects can be really disastrous...

I had the exact same issue a few years ago. Had a root canal done then a few days later I was in excruciating pain in the same tooth but it was actually coming from my sinus. The dentist checked and my tooth was fine. I've been flying just the day before when it started. I did treat my sinus infection using a netty pot to relieve the pressure (always with boiled water that you let cool down) and took oregano oil (in capsules) to treat the infection. Mold issue could also be a trigger to your sinus problem...good luck with both your pain and the mold!! take care!

Sandra where do you find oregano oil? My mother constantly has bronchitis and upper respiratory infections. Just got over a bout of pneumonia.

Kindle I understand completely!! After watching Ryan go through it, it was awful. He still has problems with certain foods like cheese or heavy sauces.

Shirl I hope you get to feeling better. Will keep you in my prayers.

Thanks for the tip. I get scratched all the time and use surgical scrub immediately to clean the wound. The problem with cat bites is they can turn nasty real quick. Cat's mouths harbor so much bacteria and their teeth are very tiny. Basically they leave a small puncture wound that heals very quickly. This seals in the bacteria they essentially injected which will fester and spread. I've only been bit twice since my C. diff episode and both times I used a scalpel blade to cut open the wound even further and soaked it in in a mixture of iodine and hydrogen peroxide. I kept the wound open purposely and continued to soak it several times/day. So far this has worked to prevent infections.

And you're right, antibiotics are very important to save lives in so many instances. The problem is they have been over prescribed when not necessary and not taken properly, resulting in vast numbers of antibiotic resistant bacteria. So here's my soapbox rant....1) do not seek out antibiotics. If you have the flu or a cold, etc. these are viruses and antibiotics won't do jack shit. But too many doctors prescribe something just to appease the patient. 2) If you (or your pets or children) are prescribed antibiotics, please take them at the dose prescribed and completely finish them. Even if you feel better. When you don't, basically you've killed off all the weaker, susceptible strains and left the strong ones that you spread around and they will just be harder to kill the next time. Multiply this several thousand times by all those people that don't follow doctor's instructions, and now you have bacteria that nothing can kill.

I buy it online on Vitacost.com. I actually buy the capsules from the Vitacost brand for several years now, I wait for a bogo offer (one full price, secong 50% off) it's a great price for strong oil. I usually take it right before my meal because you need the food to "protect" your stomach. It is strong and if you take it without food you will taste it for hours... I take is as prevention for one month two or three times per year, 1 capsule before each meal. If I'm sick I can take up to two capsules but in that case usually no more than one week/ten days. I took it before the sleeve but stopped until I was 6 months out because my reflux was too strong. Now it's fine. It's not for kids under the age of 8 years old.
I also tried the brand Vitality works on iherb, it works well too, it's just a little more expensive.

Before taking oregano I was making myself strong herbal tea with organic lemon thym, taste was awfull, it didn't work as well as oregano.
