Lightbulb From lapband to SLEEVE in Tijuana - Oct 2016

Here goes my story. I started researching doctors for bariatric surgery in Mexico. I got my top 4 and this is what I found. Please note that this is just my personal experience. I am not saying one is better than the other.

Doctor Pompa - LIMARP : this was my top choice. I completed my medical history form and sent it in on a Monday. It was Wednesday and I hadn't heard from them so I reached out and inquired about the status of my paperwork. Later that day I received an email informing me that Doc. Pompa had approved my operation and it would be $6,000. I started looking into booking the surgery (she only operates Monday-Thursday). Before I finalized everything I confirmed that it was a sleeve revision surgery (I have a lapband I want to remove and get the sleeve done). Then they responded that it was an additional $1,750. That would be bringing my total to $8,750 for revision surgery which included, transportation, 2 night hotel and 2 night hospital.

Doctor Ortiz - OCC : same standard package, transportation from San Diego to Tijuana, 2 nights hotel and 2 nights hospital for $9,000 (revision surgery). They stated they called me 3 times but I never had a missed call from them nor a voice message.

Doctor Almanza : did some researched and found some USA news report about botched surgeries done by him. He was the cheapest. $4,000 for the revision surgery. 1 night at the hospital and I can't remember how many at the hotel.

Doctor Alejandro Lopez - ALO Bariatric : I must be honest, I couldn't find much on him other than the videos he has approved and have his logo. They were very prompt to answer all my emails and questions. Standard package, transportation, 2 nights hotel, 2 nights hotel. Revision surgery $5,500. I have my surgery scheduled with Doctor Lopez on Oct 6, 2016. I fly put the same day as my surgery. I am currently doing my pre-op diet.

    Congratulations!

I did a lot of research also. As soon as I chose a Dr, it was full speed ahead!

Best of luck as you embark on your journey!

I don't know anything about Pompa, but I did have my sleeve surgery at OCC. Revision surgery is actually a specialty of Dr. Ortiz's. I'm surprised at the lack of communication from them because that's been one of their strong points for me. I was able to reach any of the doctors, office manager and dietician via phone and email before, during and even years after my surgery. I skyped with Dr. Ortiz prior to scheduling my surgery with them.

I absolutely would not go with Almanza not only because of the deaths he is linked with, but because his MO is more of an assembly line/mass quantity operation, and total lack of accessibility after the fact. I've read plenty of posts about patients unable to get simple questions answered once they get home. I think part of the problem is he uses a third party medical tourism company so you never have direct access to the doctors or the facility.

Just make sure your research and decision include not only the doctor's credentials, experience with revisions, and complication rates, but also the facility itself, staff and equipment used. OCC is an International Center of Excellence monitored by the US based SRC with a staff consisting of two anesthesiologists, advanced life support /critical care specialists, a staffed ICU, a cardiologist, a dietician and several RNs. Their equipment and consumables are all FDA approved. Dr. Pompa may work in a similar setting, but I'd definitely confirm.

Revision surgery is anything but routine, so even more care needs to be done to make sure your doctor is qualified. BTW, did you look at Dr. Corvala? He was my second choice behind OCC.

    Good luck.

Thanks for your reply. I completely agree with you regarding the revision surgery and everything that is involved with it. I actually haven't heard much about Doc. Corvala. Is he/she in Tijuana as well?

He is part of the Angeles Health International group. They have 22 hospitals throughout Mexico and there is one in TJ. Here is their website....
