Default Who else is a closet sleever?

Hello all, I have make the choice not to tell anyone about my surgery other than my husband. If I could get by without telling him, I would have! Lol. I also had a hiatal hernia repair so I told my kids and close family that I was going in for a hernia repair. I was sleeved a week ago today. I have had some complications but still am not regretting the decision. I went to the er 2 days ago because I literally felt as if I was dying. Not pain wise but so weak and dizzy and couldn't keep any protien down. Turned out it was a good thing I went because 2 days later and I'm still here. I was severely dehydrated and was merobolic acidosis. Did another swallow test this morning in hopes of going home but doc kept me because my stomach was so swollen it was like it was closed and that's why everything was coming back up. He said i need to slow but constantly sip clear liquids. So they are on me every half hour to make sure I have sipped at least 5 oz of fluid. I prefer ice chips bc they don't hurt when they get to my stomach. Apparently they know how many ice chips equal 5oz of liquid. It's constant chomping let me tel u. Every hour or so I'll take one the half hours to do juice or tea. Anyway, if I pass the swallow test tomorrow and have no nausea today I can go home ! Anyway, point of this is to get feedback and comments from my fellow closet sleeves. Keep calm and sip on y'all!!

Hi! I hope you get better soon! The only people that know about my sleeve surgery is my husband, mom, and 1 out of 7 of my sisters!. Unfortunately the family of mine that doesn't know are the type of people that believe it's "The easy way out". I'm 29 years old and was told by my doctor my future isn't to bright if I don't do something about my weight. Honestly, I don't know what happened! I always normally steadily stayed at the same weight up until last year when I switched birth controls. After that, I started ballooning uncontrollably. I got off of that birth control and still kept ballooning! I went to my PCP and tested as "Pre diabetic" immediately I went to a dietitian. After losing 40lbs, I'm still not testing any better. So long story short (LOL) I'm happy I'm keeping it a secret. But it's a shame some people are so judgmental!

Closeted sleeve her! I am normally an open book but this point in my life I really needed to do something major for me and didn't need any outside interference. Only a few people know and I am still very happy with my decision, now that I am sleeved. Eventually I will be more open but it's best for my over all health to keep it quiet. Wishing you well

Good morning! I am still very particular about who I choose to tell. My family all knows, and a lot of close friends. After 4 plus years, I just look like a picky eater, so no one has ever given a thought to question me about it. Totally your choice to tell or not! I sure hope you get back on your feet soon! I didn't have those complications, but glad you are sharing in case others do! Best wishes to you!!

I only told my husband and that's because 3 months later he had it done as well. I wasn't too happy when he went and told our neighbors, which really pissed me off especially since I didn't tell any of our friends or family members.

My husband, my parents and my brother know as well as his significant other. Everyone else, including my 9 year old son, thinks it's a hernia repair, and it is, but also a lot more.

Glad you're feeling better. My surgery is Tuesday.

Ahhhhh, the topic of "To Tell, Or Not To Tell". It's been discussed many times and there are so many differing opinions on it. I, personally, decided not to tell. I told no one at work. I told very few people in my personal life. I told my mom and dad, husband, and 2 other people who had WLS and were part of the reason I decided to do it. I just didn't want to be watched like a bug in a jar. "What's she eating", "Is she losing", "Is she cheating", "Oh!! I bet she's going to gain all of that back", "Oh, she gained 5lbs!! I guess it doesn't work after all", "She's anorexic!", "She's cheating!". I didn't want to deal with all of that. Plus, there are some very catty people who will say ugly things and will be jealous when they see things really start taking off. I chose not to deal with the drama. So, I am in the closet. I've told a few more people in my personal life and have been an inspiration for a few that chose to have the surgery. What an honor that is. But as far as work, I told no one, and I told no one in my family with the exception of my parents and husband.

You don’t have to be perfect. You just need to be better.

I'm relatively new to the site, and I'm really glad to see this discussion. I have one preop test left, then the preop visit with my surgeon, and then my surgery will be sometime in October. I've only told my husband, immediate family, and two close friends. My husband doesn't see why it's a big deal, but I am choosing to do this for myself, and it's my business and no one else's. As someone else mentioned above, I am choosing to avoid all the drama and judgment that is surely inevitable. When someone asks me how I'm losing weight, my response will be "By lots of hard work," and if they ask how much, "A lot." End of discussion.

I just wanted to add that I do not think WLS is anything to be ashamed of. Not at all! I just think some people judge because they don't know any better and think it's an "easy way out"- which is it NOT. Also, those who gave really struggled with a lot of weight gain think all we need to do is go to the gym more often- they don't understand- how could they?

The reason I am keeping it mostly private is because I just don't feel like putting myself in a position to defend my choice to others who are not my immediate famiy, and they have all been really supportive.
