    Default I cheated :(

Ok so I'm on day 6 of the 2 week preop liquid diet and I've cheated twice. Day one I ate a slice of bread and day 5 I ate a tablespoon of peanut butter. Did anyone else cheat and the doctor still perform the surgery? I'm afraid he will know and turn me away on surgery day.

In all likelihood, the surgeon is not going to turn you away. Healthcare is all about the almighty dollar. If you show up, and the surgeon's there, and the anesthesiologist is there, and the CRNA is there, and the surgical scrub team is there, all of these people will want to be paid. If the surgery does not happen, they do not get paid. That's the bottom line.

Now, here's the caveat...the pre-op diet is intended for your safety and benefit. It shrinks the liver so it is out of the way when the surgeon operates on you. If your liver has not shrunken to the surgeon's satisfaction, he/she might do an open procedure on you (read: cut you from breastbone to navel, open you up, create the sleeve, then suture you up).

An open sleeve procedure allows the healthcare team to get paid, but will require six weeks for you to recover. However, a laparoscopic sleeve procedure with tiny incisions only involves a week of recovery. The pre-op diet is hard as hell, but it is ultimately your choice to continue to risk your health.

The surgery is going to happen regardless of what you do. Trust me on that. Money makes the world go 'round, and no surgeon is walking away from a payday of thousands of dollars in this day and age. However, the outcome from continuing to eat these cheat foods may hurt your recovery. Good luck to you.

My preop diet was five days of liquids. On day 5, I was sitting in the airport in San Diego and couldn't take it anymore. So, I ordered some chicken fajitas from the Chilis in the airport and ate about half the chicken. On a side note...THE FAJITAS DID NOT SUCK.

    But, I digress.

Like Rehab said, the diet is strictly for shrinking your liver so your doctor doesn't have so much to work around. Try to stay on the diet as it's designed to help your surgeon which, in effect, helps you. But, eating what you've eaten is certainly not a deal breaker. Just for perspective. There are quite a few surgeons that do not require a pre op diet at all. So, hopefully that will put your mind at ease.

    You'll be fine.

Good luck. You have no idea how cool life is about to get for you.

Thanks tin man for the encouragement. Looks like you are doing great! Did your doctor know you had eaten the fajitas? And did he perform the surgery without delay? I'm not sure I can fib if asked how I did on the diet. I will probably tell him I slipped twice.
