    Default No straws??

I had my final pre-op appointment today and got the big packet of do's and don'ts and it may seem so minor in comparison to everything else but the one thing that disappointed me was no straws!

Anyone know what's up with that? I'm assuming it may cause gas? Has anyone not followed the suggestion and been ok? I love drinking from straws and rarely go without one, weird i know.

How about water bottles like camel bak and those type of straw-like tops, any issue with those??

    Thanks in advance!

Hey Shelby. What the doctor is trying to prevent you from swallowing a colum of air before you get to the liquid. In my case I followed the advise for the first two weeks postop and then starting using a straw again with no ill effects. I found some larger diameter straws on Amazon that make it easier to drink liquids. So if you are having a lot of gas problems after surgery you should be careful with straws. Otherwise you could give it a try. Good luck.

I use straws almost daily, I am over 16 months out though. I don't remember when I started using them again but it seems like forever. I think in the beginning stages it's more about gas than anything and I do know I didn't use one for the first couple of months post-op. Good luck, follow the rules and you will do great!

I'm two and half months post-op and used straws to help me sip water or protein instead of gulp. I didn't have an issue.

Thank you everyone for your suggestions and experience, I guess I'll wait a week or so after surgery and then give it a try and see how it goes, I know to some it probably seems so minor and it is but it just makes drinking all that water more enjoyable to me haha!

You all are so great and such a wealth of info, thank you!!

You can get air yes, but also can pull in a lot more calories that way. I use straws now, but didn't in the beginning as directed.
