    Vickybell ...

Weight loss surgery doesn't fix binge eating -- and especially not in someone whose compulsion to binge is as strong as it sounds like yours is.

The only way I have ever heard of anyone successfully dealing with binge eating is through ... (wait for it, you know it's coming!) ... therapy.

I urge you to find an experienced therapist who can help you change your behavior in this regard.

FTR, I am no kinda expert in binge eating. So beyond the advice to find a good therapist, I don't have any other tips.

Oh -- except for one thing: I will warn you that you couldn't pick a WORSE time in the WLS timeline to be binge-eating. Your tummy is still held together with staples. It is very, very far from being healed up. Your next binge-eating episode could wind up busting your staple line. And if that happened, binge-eating would be the least of your problems, since you'd be living on a pic line and unable to take anything at all by mouth.

    Good luck to you.

I'm only 3 weeks and a few days out, but I've over eaten a few times....and urped up. I say urped instead of vomit cause it was like I just burped out the excess rather than regurgitated stomach contents.

Anyway, I think it's because I'm eating too fast that I don't know it's time to stop til it's too late. Like this morning for example, I made a half piece of toast with a poached egg on it. I told myself that I prob won't be able to eat the whole thing and to be prepared to throw some away ( I HATE throwing away food, so I have to get psyched up for it). But, I ate the whole thing and I thought I was going slow, but not slow enough apparently.

I do the same thing with broth, even. Do you think maybe you have this same issue of eating too fast?

Yeah, I agree with Ann too. It may sound harsh, but a ruptured stomach leading to sepsis and death is a whole lot more harsh. Binge eating so soon totally sounds like there is more at play than simple physical needs. I sincerely wish you the best-take care!

Vickybell, bulimia under "normal" circumstances can cause some serious gastrointestinal problems, not to mention thoracic cancer from swallowing throw up back up in your lungs. I cannot imagine what it will do your sleeved tummy.

Is this out of the norm for you? Had you made yourself binge -> throw up (bulimia) pre sleeve? If so, did you did not discuss this during your psych eval? Or with your surgical team?

I truly hope you look into professional help before you cause some serious damage to yourself.

I know how hard it is to know when to stop eating, if you aren't measuring your portions now, I highly recommend you consider start doing on your next meal.

Remember this early in your sleeve, your priority is 65g of protein a day (that's the low end, I'm currently upto 80+ g of protein which is still coming mainly from protein powders). For your information, 3 ounces of minced baked or broiled boneless skinless chicken is 27g of protein, that will look like a full-card deck or the size of your palm. If you do not have a kitchen scale, I would get one; they are not more that a couple Starbucks venti frappucinos.

Start measuring 1 ounce of protein then after 15 minutes if you are still hungry add another ounce, but do not exceed 3 ounces per meal.

Also what are your binge foods? Have you found a certain "food" triggers a domino effect? These are important for you to know. I also recommend to start keeping a food log of everything you eat good or bad. If you decide to seek a therapist specializing in food compulsion they will want to know answers to some of these questions.

My grandmother always said God will help you if you help yourself first.

You will be in my heart and prayers.

Oh my! Was this a pre op behavior u shared in ur psych eval? Have u been treated for this before or is this a new behavior since surg? Getting back on track and getting binge eating in check are two very different approaches. Binge eating really needs immediate confession to ur nut and get a therapist pronto...ur safety depends on it post op!

While u sort it out, try to figure out what is triggering u.

The other thing is what do YOU mean by binge eating? This is a term folks throw around casually nowadays...did u really binge or did u just take a few bites too many and felt blech? If it is the later and u missed signals...

    Measure
Spread ur meal over 20 min, chew 30 time each bite...all the basics...get up and take a lap between bites if u have to to slow yourself down.

If u eat a bite too much and feel.blech...RESIST the temptation to make ur self throw up...go walk instead to aid digestion. Learn and try again.

Can u be more specific with "several times in the last 4 weeks"? What did u eat? How much of it? What time of day? Does this point u to a pattern? A trigger?

Now I'm going to scare the hell out of you and you need to seriously listen. I had a leak out of no fault of my own. I had nothing but a popsicle and water and it happened 4 days after surgery. If Anne didn't convince you to go to counseling then please think about what I've said. I lived on a pic line for 2 months in the hospital and went home with it for another 2 weeks. I had a nurse coming to my house twice a day. Following the rules has to be first. Tell yourself it is a matter of life or death, because it is. I know this might make you want to binge now, but please get a hold of someone immediately. There is help out there if you ask for it. Maybe an overeaters anonymous would be helpful. I think you can get a sponsor to call if you are in need of help between meetings. I would be more than willing to speak with you in a pm if you wish. I know it's hard to face your emotions but you must for your own good.

This happened to me, also. 3 days post-op. It had nothing to do with the procedure, or any fault of mine.

5 surgeries and close to 3 months in hospital, died and was revived twice. 2 pic lines. My husband had to retire to care for me.

PLEASE get some help for yourself!!!

It takes at least a year for your stomach to heal.

I suggested you reach out to Lydia Wente...but she teaches and coaches principles taught in the book Brain Over Binge by Kathryn Hansen. It's based on a non therapy approach and has produced faster results with some people than going the traditional therapy route. For example...before Lydia even finished the book...she stopped binge eating. (And I agree the term "Binge eating" can be very ambiguous...)
Get this book quickly...I read it on kindle...I'm not sure if it's available on audible yet (Lydia just finished recording it...but it may not be ready yet). This philosophy gets my highest recommendation.
