    Talking Nervous, but hopeful, Newbie

    Hi Everyone!

My surgery date is 6/20, only 10 days away! I've been lurking the forums for a week or so now and figured I should post my greeting.

Though I have been contemplating WLS for many years now, I find that as it gets closer to actually happening, I am becoming more and more nervous. I've never had anesthesia, aside from the spinal block during my C-section, and part of me is worried I won't wake up. Or there will be complications and my bill will go super high. I'm paying out of pocket (yay credit cards...) because my insurance company is dumb and I don't want to wait the requisite 3 years before I'd be eligible. Complications mean WAY more money, that I probably can't afford. Hence the nerves.

I'm not nervous about the post-op changes to my life. I know there will be an adjustment and it won't be easy, but it WILL be awesome, hence the hopefulness.

Anyway, I'm glad to have found this resource as I begin my journey. Everyone seems so supportive and friendly!

    ~ Shannon

Holy smokes! 3 years, really? Like your life is suddenly going to change and after x number of years you can suddenly lose it! My dr says the insurance likes to be a moving target! That is so true! I had tonwait a whole year for skin removal surgery because I didn't have 6 mo of documented skin rashes...I finally had it last summer, but it was a pain to get approved! I can see why you don't want to wait, but I would be nervous too. I woukd think insurance woukd kick in if there are complications though. Not sure. Anyway, best wishes to you! I love my new life since my sleeve 4 years ago-would never change that!

It's the best investment you will ever make!

That being said you do have legit fears, they were mine also. However, after weighing pros and cons of surgery, I was more at risk of dying sooner without surgery, I'm 48 years old, and my father died of diabetic complications at 50 years old.

The only concern I would have about your situation is not going through all the medical tests required for insurance approval. I have a close buddy here that I met here and started process about the same time I did, but hasn't been able to get approved by surgeon because of blood pressure. Please do me a favor, please talk to your surgeon's office about your concerns with anesthesia or other complications. I was a gastric sleeve outpatient and seriously considered going to another surgeon a few weeks from surgery because all these fears I had. I had a "business" meeting with them told them I was considering another surgeon in a hospital setting. My surgeon does Bariatric surgeries in the three best hospitals in Los Angeles, Cedars Sinai, Marina Hospital, and another in the Valley I'm not familiar with. I was told that I was in perfectly good health to undergo surgery ( except the 125 overweight, prediabetes, sleep apnea, high cholesterol, back pain and knee injury) and had the doctor anticipated 2% risks that may happen with a 400lbs+ individual he'd schedule me at one of these hospitals.

My point to this story is that you need to communicate with your surgeon and ask the hard questions... Can I trust you!? What's your mortality rate? ...

Needless to say I stayed with the surgeon.

I had zero complications, surgery took an hour or less I think, I was walking within minutes of waking up and sipping water without any complications (Thank you Jesus, and our blessed Mother!) My surgery sutures healed within the week and I was cleared for exercise on my first week. Surgeon said "look I don't anticipate any complications, you did exceptionally well in surgery, let's follow up in three months, but call anytime if you need anything." I text my surgical nurse every other day to ask about new foods or exercise, constipation, the dreaded three week stall or to say hello, but nothing major.

    Best wishes.

    Hi Shannon,

Welcome, and goodluck with your surgery I am trying to schedule mine somewhere around November.
If you will be doing a journal or a youtube, journey please add me---I heard a lot of people say that capturing moments of youtube, from the beginning gives them a sound check of where they currently are, as well as giving accountability post surgery.

Hopefully I have enough time and dedication to do that.
Goodluck dear--and you already are halfway there,by scheduling the surgery!!!

    Welcome!

I was self pay, also. After much research and getting down to 2 choices, I chose the bariatric group that offered complication insurance for up to 90 days post-op. After several severe complications and close to 3 months in hospital, I'm grateful I chose them! The insurance covered everything! You may be able to purchase complication insurance from any health insurance company.

Best of luck as you continue your journey!

Thanks for the welcome and well wishes.

I don't have any other health problems, well - besides PCOS, so I'm not expecting any complications. I'm just jittery about it.
I hadn't thought about a youtube video blog before, but it's a really interesting idea. Both to chronicle my own journey, and to give other people information. Plus, I have the added background of being a physician myself (in Neurology, nothing directly related to WLS.) It could be fun!
