    Default Surgery coming up

    Hi everyone!

I'm so glad to have found this forum! I have my surgery scheduled with Dr. Michael Snyder in Denver, for Tuesday June 7th.

Is there anyone on here who has problems with extreme nausea and vomiting in response to anaesthesia? Anyone who can give me advice on this? I have a severe reaction and I'm so nervous about this.

Also, did anyone take a long-haul flight within 6 weeks of surgery? I'm flying to Europe at just over 5 weeks post-surgery and have been assured that I will be fine, but I'm wondering if anyone has personally done this and has advice?

    Thank you!

Weight day of surgery - 244.4lbs
    Weight 2 days post-op - 249.6lbs
    Weight 6 days post-op - 237.2lbs

Hi I would inform your anesthiologist and dr about these issues. I'm sure they will prescribe Zofran or something similar to combat those issues. Plus the last thing anyone after having an abdominal surgery wants to do is vomit. You'll be ok just tell your Drs! Good luck!

I've never had nausea from anesthesia, but they gave me like 3 different anti nausea drugs in my IV before the surgery.

Oh yes.....extreme nausea and vomiting from anastasia right here.....it was not fun. Just make sure the anastasiologist (spelt that one wrong) that will be doing your surgery is aware, you will/should see them the morning of your surgery.
I started vomiting 5 hours after surgery and didn't stop for 48hrs. My swallow test was horrible, they do it the day after surgery, I swallowed it, they took a pic and I threw it all back up.
I was on IV diludid an extra day because I couldn't have anything by mouth. I stayed in the hospital for 4 days.
Prepare for that, your not going home if your vomiting. There was no going home the next day, which was new years eve. Happy new years!! Lol spent it with my face in a bucket.
There isn't much in the stomach except (this is gross) blood from the surgery, and stomach acid. They wouldn't let me brush my teeth or even rinse my mouth out until I passed the barium test. To be honest, it sucked bad. It hurt bad, but I was the only one worried I would pop. Nurses and doc weren't worried.
They gave me Zofran, that didn't work. They gave me something else, it was an injection into my thigh, it was tiger-something. It helped maybe a tiny bit.
I hope you don't go thru all that, but even if you do.....IT'S WORTH IT!!! I would do it again, I feel better then ever. If you have any questions inbox me
    Goodluck !!!

First I wish you the best of luck with your upcoming surgery. As for the vomiting I have had severe reactions to the anestethia sp? I learned after my first 2 surgeries out of about 15 surgeries form back to jaw, knee, hernias and what not. So after the first 2 times of puking my brains out I always have a very long talk with the anestetiologist sp? about this and ask them to make sure they give me more than enough nausea medication during the surgery process, since doing that I have never had an issue at all with vomiting.

As for the flying issue although my flight was not nearly as long as what you are going to be doing I did fly home 2 days after surgery from San Diego to Boston about 5hours and had no issues whatsoever. I did wear compression stockings and just kept moving around in my seat and messaging my muscles almost the entire flight. The poor guy next to me probably thought I was nuts but I didn't want blood clots. Because your flight will be 5 weeks post-op you should do just fine so don't worry about it and enjoy your trip of a lifetime.

    Kaybee,
I'm having surgery in Mexico next week and will be flying home 3 days p.o .Its a 4 hour flight.I was reassured by my surgical team it won't be a problem.I have scheduled a stop over so I can get out and walk, but it's still a fairly long flight.I would think 5 wks out would be fine just drink plenty of water and take frequent trips down the aisles. Good Luck!

I had major nausea and dry-heaving for 72 hours after surgery. I also have a terrible reaction to anesthesia. I should've gone home the next day but had to stay almost 4 days. That was the worst part. If this does happen, you will get through it. I found that my gas discomfort lasted longer than others because of the fact that I couldn't really get out bed and walk to get it moving right after surgery. You will be ok even if you feel awful right after surgery. It will pass. I don't have any regrets whatsoever and almost 3 years out. I didn't travel on an airplane but I did spend a week at the beach about 1 month post op. I just had to make sure to measure my meals and stick to my routine. I did dehydrate a bit so make sure you are conscientous about this on a long flight. Best of luck to you and keep us posted!

No reactions to anesthesia to report here.

I was supposed to be on a plane to Aruba for a 10-day post graduation celebration exactly today, but three days after surgery I cancelled, because I just did not think I would be up to it, while I'm feeling fine I do not regret cancelling, my energy is just not what it normally is. My life-partner was able to cancel without penalties! Thank goodness for Marriott Hotel and for Southwest Airlines. Otherwise, I'd be on that plane.

Wow! Thank you all so much for your responses.

I will really drive home the point that I am prone to getting sick, to the anaesthesiologist. I've had Zofran before and it didn't help. When I (very unpleasantly) found out that I had this reaction, it took 7 anti-nausea medications in my IV, plus a suppository (delightful, I know!) to get me to stop throwing up. It's an awful experience!

Thank you all so much for your advice regarding this, and flying. I appreciate it!

Wow! I'm so sorry you had to experience that. There is nothing worse than already feeling crappy from a surgery and then your own body betrays you like that. I've had Zofran. I've had some medication they give chemo patients. Neither worked. The one and only thing that ever works for me is something called Valoid, which is a South African medication. The injections and suppositories work like magic, but you can't get it in the US.
    Glad you're doing well now!

I had surgery on January 20, three days of non stop vomiting followed, I received a lot of strong shots of medication in my IV to try to stop it but it didn't work. I was expecting it anyway...had to stay in hospital one more day, total of 4 days post-op, kept the IV for fluids until I stopped vomiting on day 3 at night. I couldn't keep water, so my surgeon gave me juice mixed with water and it felt better from that point.
I did fly back to the US on March 1st, so 6 weeks after surgery. It was a 12 hours flight, I took some homeopathic remedies for nausea because the flight had lots of turbulence. I was drinking a lot, walked as much as possible and bought a water bottle after security check so I didnt have to wait for the flight attendant to bring water...and also came on board with protein bars (Luna) just in case the food was too bad. It was fine, I didn't eat much anyway...good luck and take care!

I also had a scpopalomine patch, they hit me with everything and I've never had problems with nausea in the past. I wonder if they got me mixed up with someone else? I wish they would have taken better care of my airway, cause now I have bronchitis. Grrr

I have always had problems with extreme nausea and vomiting with anesthesia. It isn't a problem anymore, though. Just tell your Dr. and they can give you something in with the anesthesia. That will take care of that problem.
