Personally, I would rather have a private room.
Dear "Jitters"......you don't need to be jittery. It's going to be fine and you are making the best decision for your future health and quality of life.
I had surgery on April 25 with Dr. Hernandez at Tijuana Bariatric Center (Dr. Almanza's practice) and it went as smooth as silk. Most of the women (and on my surgery day it was all women) who had surgery on the same day I did, came alone. They all seemed to be grateful for their roommate's support and company and have made lasting friendships. The friendships have really been a bonus of this experience. As someone else noted, the doctors in this practice are so so experienced. They do more of these surgeries in a week than an American bariatric surgeon does in months. It is a well oiled machine and the care is excellent. On my surgery day, there were 12 patients that I saw. Of the 12, 9 had Dr. Hernandez do their surgery and I have kept in touch with 6 of them. All are doing really well. One has had problems with acid reflux and nausea and has had to progress more slowly from liquid to soft to solid foods. Another one has had to progress more slowly from liquid to solid also, but hasn't had the acid reflux. Everyone else has just followed the week by week progression and been just fine.
As far as advice.....this is just my personal experience: I didn't use the heating pad. The gasX strips are essential the first 24 hours after surgery. After that, walking is more effective for the gas. Also essential are socks, and a book.....all the TV is in Spanish!! Since TJ is a border town, American dollars are fine...and bring lots of $1s for tips. You will need to tip the van driver to and from the airport and the service people at the hotel. I never took any of the pain meds they gave me....never needed it. Obediently follow the pre and post op instructions...they are the key to a successful outcome. Just feel calm and confident that you have made a positive and thoughtful decision to make your future healthier.
Thanks so much. I feel so much better. You gave me so much information and I sincerely appreciate it. I am realizing that this week is my last week before my pre op diet.....everything I put in my mouth I know it will be a long long while before I will be able to eat that!!! LOL. I made spaghetti last night with my homemade sauce....oh so good. You have done so well in a short amount of time. Way to go!!!!
I agree whole heartedly, Jeff!
As for the sauce...I'm first generation American Italian. Sauce is a daily occurance!
At this point (5 months post-op), I can't eat anything with even a hint of sauce on it! The beautiful tomatoes I pick from my garden will have to be canned because I cannot eat them! What a bummer! I hope this changes, but if it doesn't I'll live with it.
It's the thought of it I miss! (Thanks Jeff!)
