    Default What about spicy foods?

I'm new to this forum. Went to seminar on Saturday and I'm committed to get this done. Failed to ask this question at seminar but my wife and I love spicy foods, especially green chile and we truly enjoy the hot stuff, and use it in many of our meals. Will I have to give this up forever????

    I don't know about forever...
In my own experience, almost 5.5 months out, I'm still not able to eat anything mildly spicy! I love hot and spicy and I hope this changes. I never had problems before WLS.
Some have posted that they're able to eat hot and spicy fairly soon after starting to eat solid food. IDK...We're all different!

It's impossible to predict in advance. I think most people don't have any issues with spicy foods (particularly if you are big on spicy foods pre-op), but there are occasional people who just don't get back to them. I can tell you that I have had zero problems with spicy foods, and I was putting sriracha in my chicken broth within 10 days or so post-op.

I diced some jalapeno peppers for my chicken and veggie fajita without tortilla meals this past week. I love their flavor but don't eat as spicy foods as I did when my mom was alive and cooking all of her delicious Mexican food.

I love spicy food . I had a little time at beginning that it bothered me but now I'm good. I eat a lot of taco meat and cheese with salsa

I stopped by a local Mexican restaurant and had a small pork over chile rojo burrito for dinner this evening. I also like to add buffalo sauce and Tabasco sauce to my food for a hot kick.

I've been able to easily tolerate spicy foods since being cleared to eat solids. Unless your system is finicky, you will not need to give up spicy stuff.

What you can and can't tolerate postop varies so much, there's really no way to predict what your experience will be. Personally, I was putting Tabasco on my refried beans during my pureed stage. But my spicy food tolerance maybe went down a little bit, because when I order Thai food I have to order "3 star spicy" instead of 4 or 5 star. I think it's because I don't eat the rice which typically acts as a buffer for the spiciness so I have to tone it down a bit.

I'm eating spicy green chicken chili right now

It seems strange to me that I can tolerate spicy but not creamy or heavy dairy stuff.. Over 2 years post op.

You folks have given me renewed hope for my revered green chiles. Being New Mexican, green chiles are put in just about everything. This past year we not only froze half a bushel of "Hots", we froze half a bushel of "Lumber chiles" which are XXX hot.

Really appreciate all the responses. Thanks

I was blending green chilies and hot sauce into my soups during the pureed stage. One of my favorite condiments now is spicy salsa, and I love eating fajita chicken or carne asada with spicy roasted chilies. You will have to do small taste tests as you move from food stage to food stage to see what your sleeve will and won't tolerate. Sometimes what it will tolerate will go back and forth. Don't give up hope for all things spicy, but remember to protect your sleeve and do small taste tests so you don't end up with sleeve pain, bad hiccups or heartburn.

I am nearly 5 years post op and my tolerance and desire for spicy food is way reduced. I used to love spicy thai food for example, and i just don't care for it much anymore. Strange isn't it?

Pre sleeve I could eat raw habaneros with no problems. I've only recently tried eating a cooked habanero and had no ill effects. Post sleeve I tend to prefer spicy over non spicy foods. I would rather eat buffalo chicken instead of the same piece of chicken without the buffalo sauce.
