    Default anyone 3-4 years out?

    Hey all,
I had my surgery almost 4 years ago, and within the last year, I have really lost control! I went form 257 down to 170 and am now back up to 188. I am really struggling with the mental aspect of this whole journey.....I feel like I am seriously addicted to food and did this whole process for no reason....Does anyone else feel like the farther out they are, the less restriction they feel? I am just really frustrated and feel like I am completely failing.

I am having my 4 year anniversary tomorrow. I am finding that i have to be more diligent in making sure that i at least get my protein and water minimal amounts. Be aware of slider cravings and keep my mood up. My body is not as forgiving as it was the past few years.
I am ok with this and work to keep the gains within reasonable amounts. I am 74 years old, love me and what i have done for me.
Have to keep focused and not take this sleeve for granted. I love my sleeve.

Happy EARLY anniversary to you, thenewmetoday. You are a big role model for me. Thank you for all your wonderful posts here. I always appreciate your candor and your success.

depeeler, I'm not nearly as far out as you (only 20 months post-op). The only advice I can offer is that my therapist (I've been seeing him for 24 months now) has really helped me a lot.

If you are suffering from food addiction issues (emotional eating), you surely would profit from finding a good therapist to work with you on those issues.

Also, on another WLS forum recently, someone posted a link to this article that I think is a good "reader's digest" article about what emotional eating is vs. mindful eating. It may be something that will help you look at your situation in a way that helps you get your power back:

    http://www.helpguide.org/articles/di...nal-eating.htm

P.S. But I'm not kidding about a therapist -- seriously, do consider it.

I am at 4 years tomorrow. I have been at goal weight plus for 3 years. What i notice now is that i have to be more vigilant with protein and water and watching cravings of sliders foods. I love my sleeve, it keeps me in line and keeps me aware of my focus. Health. My body is not as forgiving as it has been over the last 4 years. I am ok with this, not a big price to pay for health and self esteem.

It seems that i have repeated myself, sorry, but good message anyway. I have always used a counsellor through my life and it has been very helpful with this journey. I have had many breakthroughs over the last 4 years, places i had never been before, understanding why food was so important and now it is fuel. Good life to all.

It is normal for restriction to diminish as the years pass. According to a prominent bariatric surgeon in Michigan who has a popular YouTube channel, the typical weight loss surgery patient is able to eat an entire plate of food by 5 years out.

The restriction's still there, but it will never be as tight as it was during the first few months. If you think about it, you were probably able to eat 3 to 5 plates of food before the sleeve, so 1 plate at 5 years is still doing well.

This is why it was important to establish good habits during that first year post-sleeve to last for a lifetime. Personally, I see a counselor who specializes in compulsive eating issues. I wanted to be proactive and make changes before the bad habits slipped back into my life.

It is so much harder now to take off more weight. I can also eat a whole lot more, but like Kindle, I try to really pay attention to how yI am feeling and stop before I overfill. Doesn't always mean I am successful, but one nice thing about the sleeve is you have to chew your food well or you end up with a massive stomach ache. At least I do. That gives time for the stomach to send the brain the satiated signal to help stop. I struggle with sweers more than really overeating, but I also try to make good choices. Instead of total pasta which I love, when we have spaghetti, I make half mine zucchini strips sauteed and not only am I getting much more in the way of nutrition, I get half the carbs. I don't have all the answers but am still not giving up on my final goal of 125. I just have to be committed and have always said patience is not my best virtue, but you have to be mych more patient this far out. I will be 4 years on June 13 and have never regretted it. I love being able to do what I want without fear I won't fit, be laughed at, etc. You CAN do this! Start with the principals you learned way back when you started. They really do work, and you will have to be diligent about your diet. Also exercise hasn't really helped with the weight loss, but it does help keep it off. I try to walk an hour a day on the treadmill 5-6 days a week. It is hard to do this with my crazy schedule but I have managed so far. Keep in touch!

Next month will be my four-year anniversary. My weight went from 415 to 279 in the first year or so. But then I stopped losing, and some of it came back. I am annoyed with myself for letting it happen.

A sleeved friend of mine lost down to about 155. Then during a period of great stress she regained 20 pounds.

After doing the pouch test (google it!) and going back to basics, she's re-lost 15 of those pounds and will surely lose the additional 5 pounds.

You can get back on the horse.

    Just do it.

Your pouch is probably still a lot smaller than your original stomach but as others have pointed out, once the initial swelling from the surgery recedes and the remaining stomach pouch softens up you can definitely eat a lot more. I'm 2 1/2 years out and regained 30 lb from my lowest weight (165 lb). Yup ... back up over 200 before I finally steeled myself and stepped on the scales. I never thought I would let this happen and here I am. You are getting onto the regain thing early on ( only 18lbs)... so congrats on that.

I have actually lost 20 lbs of the regain and am confident the rest will come off eventually - maybe I'll even make it to my original goal - hope so. So this is what I am doing now:

    * tracking everything I eat with fitness pal
    * being diligent about getting all my protein in each day
    * working on drinking all my water - this part is hard for me
    * stop drinking 15 minutes before meals and waiting until an hour afterwards to drink again ... drinking with my meals is a definite no-no. I read that when you drink with food it turns into a slurry in your pouch and exits quickly so you don't get the full feeling and can eat more in one sitting.
    * always eat protein first .. I think my pouch actually tightens up around meat proteins and I can't eat as much when I follow this rule ... for me it really is a matter of going back to the basics and sticking with them.
*I am not as active as I would like to be (have some mobility issues) and so have to watch my calorie intake as I can easily go over the amount I need to maintain my weight (let alone lose the excess)!

Good luck with getting back to where you want be - I am sure you can do it! Posting is your first step along the way ...
