    Default Greetings from California!

Hello everyone, I'm Caren and have decided to have the sleeve later this year. My best friend has the procedure done six weeks ago and had a great experience. Since my doctor/insurance won't cover the procedure without jumping through hoops I've decided to have the procedure done in Mexico by Dr. Marcelo Hernandez in September.

Any advice that could be offered would be appreciated. I've already decided to follow the pre-op instructions given in the US as the ones provided in Mexico aren't as detailed. Example: Pre-op liquid diet recommended in Mexico is for 3 days vs. 2 - 3 weeks in US for a smaller liver.

Thanks to everyone who has already shared their story.

    Welcome!!!

I'm going through the hoops myself, hopefully I will find out by end of April when I will get scheduled for surgery.

I have taken this time to learn about what have triggered emotional eating behaviors that have gotten me here in the first place. Behavior modification I understand will be a key to the success of life long maintenance. Understanding that age, genetics will also play a part are important particularly when there are stalls even when adhering to strict medical recommendations.

I have a nutritionist/dietician I meet with monthly, cutting simple carbs and high fat foods, basically junk and fast fried foods, was my first modification. Not easy I tell you, but doable. Last we met she asked me to start a food journal, there are many free apps you can use such as MyFitnessPal or LoseIt. I have not been consistent tho. I do check in with her via email.

I am currently following a Paleo-Diabetic diet plan. Which is rich in protein and low in carbs, though I seldom eat beef or pork, lots of chicken and fish and recommended vegetables. I do have dairy from only grass fed and organic in the form of yogurt and milk a couple of times a week. I use Whey Isolated protein powder for my shakes, which is my first and last meal of the day. I have normally a well rounded lunch with a few snacks in between.

I'm also blending (oppose to juicing) more often now a days.

I have not started to exercise, but I try to walk 10,000 steps a day. I may complete that bout three days a week. But I range 5000-6000 steps daily. I have bad knees and low back pain. Not a good combo.

I was informed that I would be required to on a two week preop liquid diet before surgery, and a three day clear liquid diet prior to surgery. No caffeine for three days either.

I've lost some weight, and I hope to loose a few more before my next appt on April 26.

I'd say start clearing your fridge and pantry from junk food and start eating healthier more nutritious foods now.

    Best of luck.

Yes, emotional eating is something I'm working on. I lost my father a few months ago and quickly put on 15 pounds. I've lost the 15 and I'm now more conscience of overeating. I'm working on the fridge and pantry now LOL.

Thats alot of good information there Shirl. I also do a food journal. It helps me keep track plus if I get the munchies I know if I have the calories left for the grapes, apple, or orange. My downfall is usually at night, So I try to leave enough calories so I can have an apple with peanut butter in the evening. Your gonna do great Caren!! Start filling your fridge and pantry with healthy foods now and start looking at some protein powders to. I use Isopure from GNC. I mix it with 12oz almond milk and 1 scoop protein powder and thats my breakfast. You can also add some lowfat yogurt to it to keep you full longer. On a side note: Still waiting on my surgery date as well.
