    Default What i worry about...

I realize that in the whole scheme of things this is a pretty trivial thing to worry about. But, I really like cereal. after surgery you cant mix food and liquid. how do you eat cereal? I know I can have cereal in yogurt, but it is not the same as a bowl of cereal in cold milk. Any suggestions?

Soup is mixed liquid and solid so I'm not sure why you couldn't have Cereal and milk. I think the lack of protein is more the reason it might not be suggested.

First, you need to know that your tastes change..while i was a big cereal eater prior to getting the sleeve and couldnt imagine life without it, i am not like that now, wasnt even something i wanted.
second, remember that most carbs are slider foods..meaning that if you start eating them..it feels like you can eat a lot of them which doesnt help your sleeve to work. the restriction is used when you dont eat all the slider foods..sliders do just that..slide through you.
    now in saying all that..
i do have cereal from time to time..very seldom, but now after a year i do have it from time to time..
but what i grew to love was yogurt and a bit of granola..(again slider...whatch out for that granola)
but this is MUCH later your tummy has to heal..and you have to learn to change your behaviors..
that is one of my go to's
so is my wonderful cottage cheese..
but so many things taste just so much different you are going to be surprised at what you will like..
so as for the liquid and food thing..well i know soup is good..but the main thing is for us to not eat and drink so that food stays in the stomach longer causing the sleeve to work better and cause the restriction that we need. so that is the main reason for the no eatting and drinking at the same time.

Yeah, cereal is pretty worthless to you post-op -- at least until you have lost all your excess weight.

It's very much what the WLS world calls "slider food" -- foods that are highly processed, require little digestion, slide quickly out of the stomach, leaving it empty, and leaving you hungry very soon after eating.

Plus, most cereals have lots of sugar added (whether you can taste it or not). And the horror of sugar added to starchy, processed flour foods is that it stimulates your hunger.

Again ... "slider foods." Google that term. You'll learn a lot.

    Sorry.

Eh I could take or leave cereal pre-op. Sometimes my boyfriend is eating a huge bowl of it and I'll take one piece of it. Or I ask to sniff it lol. I sniff foods I'm not going to eat. I have no idea if that's normal or if it helps at all, but I figure one bite or sniff is fine. it's pretty rare for me to want a piece though

I loved cereal before surgery. After surgery I was so focused on eating soft foods that cereal was forgotton. When your sleeved food is just a fuel. You need to check labels and be aware of carbs and calories. You need to always do protein first and if you have room you move on to veggies. If you think it's going to be hard for you to quit eating cereal then I would start working on that now.
Carbs are something your going to want to stay away from, the more you have the more your going to crave
As for milk, a lot of people told me that after surgery they became lactose intolerant. I finally tried milk and learned that I was fine with it. Be careful when you try milk for the 1st time :-)

Gained up to 158 by 3 years 3 months!

    hoping to stay between 140lbs-145lbs
4 years hanging in between 145 and 150

I certainly will. It is good to know that I won't be so focused on some things afterwards.

I used to do cereal a lot prior to WLS. I have it once in a while - I try to look for the highest protein I can. Found that there are some higher protein oatmeals out there. Don't do it often. one site I've ordered from mybariatricpantry.com has some alternatives to use.

I used to be a big cereal lover too, but after surgery, food for the most part was just fuel to me, not something I craved or loved. I have had cereal a couple of times; I would do a half serving of a Kashi protein rich cereal in Fairlife non fat milk because it has twice the protein and half the sugar of other milk. I let the cereal sit in the milk for a while so it gets mushy, and then I eat. But I've only had cereal I think two times since surgery. Food really is just sort of "meh" to me now.

I haven't eaten cereal since surgery which was over 2 years ago. In fact I just threw out some expired boxes. My typical breakfast used to be oatmeal, now it's eggs. I stick to protein first, and cereal isn't protein. I can't say that I miss it at all.

I make a mix of granola, raisins, pepitas, almonds, soy nuts, sesame sticks, sunflower seeds. The freezer bag(gallon) full of my mix can last a month. Cereal I eat dry once in awhile(no milk). I love Nature's Path Pumpkin Flax granola and Coconut Chia. Used to be a huge cereal eater. But my tastes have totally changed.
