    Default Medical Marijuana post op

Hi I am preparing to have the gastric sleeve in early summer. I am wondering about using medical marijuana (in a legal state of course) to help with stomach pains, nausea, and easing the possible stomach upset that may occur as a result of reintroducing foods and vitamins to the digestive track. I believe it may be a good alternative to prescription pills during my initial transition. Any thoughts?

I never had any nausea, pain, stomach upset, etc after surgery. Transitioned slowly through the stages as instructed and healed up perfectly fine with no meds whatsoever. But everyone is different, so if you are having surgery in a state where marijuana is legal, you should discuss it as a possible treatment plan with your surgeon In case you do have problems. Like any other drug you want to make sure it is not contraindicated for your procedure and recovery process.

Honestly, I think you're imagining a lot of post-op symptoms that most people don't have. I'm over 18 months post-op, and I have yet to throw up even once. I've also never been nauseated. Even once. And immediately post-op I took a pain med only twice (on days 2 and 3) and soon realized I didn't need the med -- was only taking it prophylactically.

With MJ, I would also be worried about the munchies -- although I've read there are strains that don't have munchie effects.

    My two cents' worth.

I have suffered from sever symptoms of gastric distress for unknown reasons since I was about 13 years old. I am subject to boughts of nausia and uncontrollable dry heaving almost every day in response to an overwhelming feeling of emptiness i experiance in my stomach and lower gi tract. I do not know what causes the sensation because it is not resolved by eating. It actually makes me feel sicker to eat while i am feeling this way. I usually have to wait until the sensation passes in order to put anything in my stomach. It is not a gagging mind you and is not the result of gas either. I don't know what causes it and have never found a way to keep it from happening. I don't know if the surgery will resolve this issue or if will still effect me for sometime afterwards. I am worried about the potential of ripping stables out if I have the sensation to throw up after surgery. I believe that marijuana will help prevent me from experiencing cramping and nausea that may occur from introducing new foods and substances to my system. I know there is a risk of cauging from smoking marijuana but I am trying to determine which possibility has more risk of causing potential problems.

I am not looking for excuses to smoke pot I don't need excuses to do so if I so choose. I don't know if nausea and vomiting are common after surgury, that's why I am seeking feed back. I didn't know if that was something that i needed to be concerned about post op. I truly hope the surgery will resolve whatever has been causing me to be sick for so long. I just wanted to know if anyone needed medications to relieve irritation or aid healing. My goal is to stop using prescription medications all together after I undergo the procedure and I wondered if I was going to need to consider ways to alivate discomfort naturally.

If you believe marijuana will relieve your current symptoms, why don't you try it now -- before surgery, to find out?

I've never heard of your symptoms (they sound awful). I hope you can find a bariatric surgeon who is familiar with this condition who can give you an informed opinion about whether this is something that WLS can alleviate or not.

I know smoking cigarettes is a no no. It effects healing. I'm not sure of pot will effect you if you smoke or ingest it. I would be worried about munchies. I would definitely have to bring out the beer, chips, and pizza. It would all be down hill from there.

I never had pain either some naseau after going to bed and waking up like 2ish ,but went away. If i eat to much now its nit naseau or painful its a different feeling for me like when youve overstuffed before surgery but times a million and the only thing to make it go away is throwing up.

I have not received any information or instructions from my surgeon or health care providers about what to expect after surgery as possible side effects and ways to aid my healing process and transition to a healthier way of life. The thought of tearing my staples out due to nausea or vomiting has had me freaked out. I only wondered if I needed to think about ways to prevent this from happening so I do not cause damage to my body or hinder the healing process. I can not smoke marijuana legally at this time but my past experiences have proven positive therapeutic effects. Smoking calms my stomach and my nerves in a way that relieves the symptoms I experience from my various medical conditions. I have been told that smoking in general will not cause injury to my stomach and quitting is not a requirement, although is highly recommended. I hope I did not give anyone the impression that I only brought up the topic to seek attention or cause debate, that was not my intention in any way. I was merely speculating whether or not it would possibly be beneficial to me during my recovery process. Thank you for the responses.

Actually, smoking tobacco DOES cause complications after WLS -- it retards wound / incision healing, increases infection rates, causes more stomach ulceration (you really DON'T want an ulcer in a skinny, little sleeve, because there's not a lot of stomach left to cut out!), leads to tissue necrosis, increases odds of blood clots post-op, is associated with more pain post-op and a need for more opioids to manage pain.

In addition to complications that are pretty icky, not to mention expensive, smoking tobacco doubles your chances of death from complications following bariatric surgery.

Many US bariatric surgeons will not perform WLS on patients who smoke. Period. They test patients periodically leading up to surgery to ensure that they're not doing so.

Here's one study to start your education. Google is also your friend:

I am have reduced my smoking in anticipation of the surgery but my surgeon is not disqualifying me based on being a smoker. If nothing else i see it as having the potential to stretch my stomach out by sucking in air and that is reason enough to quit. I am trying, I promise. :-)
