Question what should I tell work??

    Hi All,

I work in a school in the UK as a teaching assistant , where we are expected to take holidays in school breaks only. Time off sick is allowed though..
I'm just not sure what to do about my op and whether to tell them and request time off to recover or to wait until the next big school holiday (Easter or Summer)
I am really worried that they will see this procedure as an elective decision and refuse the time off, I am also worried about the reaction of my co - workers...... I am over weight approx 22 stones - prob the largest member of staff - I'm just not sure I can handle opinionated criticism!! My next appointment is on the 7th October and it is to meet the doctor & dietitian to finalise the approval and make arrangements - so I could get offered a date before the end of the year!! I just don't know what to do!! Any ideas??

    Thanks Sam x

Could you tell them you are having stomach surgery to fix an issue that has been bothering you? They don't need to know what type of stomach surgery ... and what type of bothering... I didn't have to tell anyone here in the US what type of surgery ... just that my doctor and insurance had cleared me to have this surgery and I was having it this particular day.

You're having issues with your esophagus. That would explain pre and post op diet changes. The time off for surgery.

You could also just let them know you are making a lifestyle change and going on a very strict supervised diet.

I too am having the same challenge but have scheduled my surgery during allowed vacation time. I'm not good at not telling the truth so I don't knwo what to do. I definitely feel your anxiety on this one and am also curious as to what others will share on the topic.

I am only telling my family, I am not telling people that look at me as weak. They have walked in my shoes.

I have asked this same question honestly you do not have to tell them anything but if you must you can tell them you are having a Laparoscopic hernia surgery as well as having problems with your esophagus.
