Default Who here had BMI 60+ and got sleeved?

    Hi All

    I'm 5'11" HW 481 BMI 61

I was all set on getting the sleeve. But I'm worried I wont lose enough weight with it. When I meant with my surgeons nurse practitioner she made it sound like high BMI are better off getting bypass. I've just read about so many people that have had the bypass that have issues.

So I'm hoping to hear from some other people that started close to 500lb or 60+ BMI and see how your success has been.

    Thanks in advanced.

Default Re: Who here had BMI 60+ and got sleeved?

One forum member (Tinman) was sleeved at 530 pounds and successfully got down to 265.

Your gender is important...I do not know if you are male or female. Super-obese men seem to do well with the sleeve due to higher metabolic rates. However, I've observed that super-obese women with at least 250+ pounds to lose often do not get to their goal weights with a sleeve...they usually need to have a conversion to the bypass or duodenal switch to get the results they wanted.

As always, you mileage may vary. Good luck to you!

With people of your size, the sleeve is considered a phase 1 surgery with bypass the second phase. You might be able to forego that if you stay with the plan religiously.
    Starting weight 06-06-11: 215 36.9 BMI
    Weight at Surgery 09-07-11: 188 32.3 BMI
Current Weight as of 05-15-12: 135<-- As of 145lbs No longer overweight!
    Goal: 120 <-- Ideal weight 20.6 BMI

I started with a BMI of 59.9, so not quite 60 but close enough. As of last week my BMI based on the charts is 26.8. Based on a Body Composition test it's 20.2. Follow the plan you're given as you progress through the food stages. At some point you'll need to find what works for you. Some people go low carb, some track everything and some have a combination. Best of luck to you

You are going to be the deciding factor if you succeed or not. I was at a BMI of 70 when I decided I had to lose weight which was about 478 lbs. I got down to 320 when I had my sleeve and I'm doing great but I concentrate hard on food and I make it a point to stand instead of sit anytime possible so I'm exercising more without having to "make time to exercise".
You can do it no matter which tool you choose you will have to use it wisely. Best of luck to you

So glad to see your post. You're giving me some hope. I'm at 386 with a BMI of 68. I really want to have surgery with Dr. Alvarez but he won't do it until I'm at a BMI of 56. So I need to lose about 70-75 lbs. Can you tell me what you did to lose the pre-surgery weight and how long it took you? Aside from standing, what else did you do for exercise? What types of foods to you eat to lose?

hello I am 5 7 & I initiallaround 390 a BMI of about 61.1 + currently I had my surgery in March of last year so I'm almost a year out and I've lost about a hundred lbs. My case is really slow because if you read my profile I'm disabled and I can't exercise, I can really walk now I'm doing better I can walk a little bit but as far as exercising I knew that it was going to be trouble for me . But I had no other options at the I went from being bedridden to up and shopping, driving, myself I'm doing much better, however recently last time I went into my doctor the doctor decided he was going to put me on Phentermine a bit of help & give me another boost and get me out of the plateau I've been in for the last few months. So I want on Phentermine this month it looks like I've lost about 11 pounds hopefullly thank God my body is moving again so maybe that's just what I needed to get my metabolism back started again. Since I can't use my own metabolism other than just eating the protein. Obviously I need a little bit more than that so if it looks like what I think it is I go back in on Wednesday to do my weight check & hopefully it is what I think it is & my scale isn't just playing with me!
I will say I love this tool and my doctor is awesome when I went back k in last month he did not even think twice before he said okay we're integrated put you on the medically supervised program that way we can go ahead and help you out and get you to where you need to be so It really really feels nice when you have a doctors who don't look at you like while you know you failed , that's a big thing so hopefully are you have a doctor who is patient with you and I'm sure you did all your research on him or her that way you feel comfortable going into surgery knowing that it's not about a pass or fail it's about being healthy obviously we can't be healthy at a BMI of 50 or 60 we know that we have to get smaller than that . But it's not so much about the weight as it is as your body begins to shrink your mind will follow u just know you're not alone and that you made a really good choice , stick with that and you know just meditate on it pray on it whatever you do to help yourself get through the day . Great advice from the people here on the board and your doctor I think we'll be fine! God bless you and your family :-)

I started at 367 and 5ft 6 inches. I am down 105 pounds at only 5 months. The sleeve can work but you need to find the type of diet that works for you. I do low carb, high protein.

I had my sleeve in April 2013. 6ft 1, 498 lbs. BMI 65. I got down to 275 (and maintaining), but am not losing any more weight. It sounds crazy, but I just stopped losing weight, no matter how strict my diet was, how much I was exercising, etc. I would love to get down to 220 or so, but at the same time I went from a 64 waist to a 44, from a 5xl shirt to an xxl, and feel terrific.

    Good luck with your journey!

Hmmm my bmi was 58 at this time last year and today it's 39, 40. For you, I suggest doing 2 surgeries or lose as much as you can for the next year and THEN get the surgery. I want to lose 150-200 pounds so I lost as much as I could from about mid-March last year to late September last year before I had my surgery. A lot of surgeons want their patients to lose 5% of their weight before they schedule the surgery date so maybe that could be a goal for you.
    Good luck on your decision!

    Weight Loss:
6 Month Requirement with Nut = 41 pounds
    1st mo = 19 pds
    2nd mo = 19 pds
    3rd mo = 9 pds
    4th mo = 16 pds
    5th mo = 11 pds
    6th mo = 9 pds
    7th mo = 4 pds
8th mo = 1 pd (bad food choices)
    9th mo = 4 pds
    10th mo = 3 pds
    11th mo = 3 pds
    12th mo = 4 pds
    13th Mo = 3 pds

I was sleeved at age 56. I am/was post-menopausal. I had diabetes (insulin 50 units BID and Byetta 50 mcg BID), severe obstructive sleep apnea (CPAP set on 18) and hypertension (40 m lisinipril.)
HW: 350. SW: 324, GW: 175, CW: 154. My beginning BMI was 64.8.
While I am still in the overweight category, my PCP has told me NOT to lose anymore weight because she is factoring in my loose skin.
I still work the program: protein first, then non-starchy veggies, then fruit. I still stay away from pasta, rice and bread as they were my trigger foods. I still adhere to no eating/drinking within 30 minutes.
If you follow the guidelines, you can be successful.

Feel free to pm me if you have any questions. My BMI was high, my BP was high, my attitude was low, and my hopes were even lower.

To say that this surgery is life changing is simply not adequate
