Default Do you feel like a survivor?

I was speaking to my therapist and she refered to me as a "morbid obesity survivor" I have never heard it said like that before. My BMI has gone from about a 70 but now It's a 28 so I guess she is correct. I guess I just never thought of It in those terms.

Default Re: Do you feel like a survivor?

My BMI was a little over 50 during my first appointment with the surgeon, and after a few tests, he told me I was a high risk patient.

I lost a total of 8 kgs (18 pounds) before surgery, which was not much, little more than 5% of my total body weight, but the tests my surgeon had me take right before surgery came back really good, and he told me the day of surgery I was not a high risk patient anymore!!!

So going from a BMI of 70 to 28 that's really huge!!! you did extremely well and must be proud of it! you're therapist is right, you did escape obesity, you did escape being sick from obesity issues! usually the word survivor is used for cancer patient, but obesity kills too, except it's hidden behind the other disease (co-morbidity) like diabetes or high blood pressure who's responsible for the issues. But often, obesity is the trigger.

That's why bariatric surgery should be covered by insurances worldwide and it's a shame it's not.

    take care,

Hmm yes I'd say that I feel like a survivor! My bmi was 58 before and is currently 40 (I weigh 243 pounds last I checked).

I was at 355 pounds last March and knew I wouldn't see my 1year old son turn into a young man at the rate I had been gaining weight over the past 5+ years. I'm very proud of my decision and of my progress so far. I still have a ways to go (hoping to get closer to 150 than 200), but I'm looking forward to the journey

    Weight Loss:
6 Month Requirement with Nut = 41 pounds
    1st mo = 19 pds
    2nd mo = 19 pds
    3rd mo = 9 pds
    4th mo = 16 pds
    5th mo = 11 pds
    6th mo = 9 pds
    7th mo = 4 pds
8th mo = 1 pd (bad food choices)
    9th mo = 4 pds
    10th mo = 3 pds
    11th mo = 3 pds
    12th mo = 4 pds
    13th Mo = 3 pds

Honestly, I am at the beginning of my journey so I can not say I have survived [yet]. I can understand the term and why she used it. Perhaps, one day, I'll be able to use that terminology for me.
Just another comment...if anyone can survive the clear liquid diet for two weeks they can survive the rest of the journey. [Just another one of my unsolicited opinions].

For me, I feel like a morbid obesity warrior. No offense, but in my book, a "survivor" is someone who survives a negative situation that was forced on you and, in my opinion, that makes you a victim. No one forced any of us to be obese. But, you took action, on your own, to overcome the disease.

That makes you a warrior, not a victim. Being a warrior is always preferable to being a victim.

Hm that's a good question...I am still working on this, so not sure I feel like a survivor yet. Maybe when I hit my goal weight I will. Warrior at the moment may be more befitting, later a survivor!

Warrior is a great term and the description that tinman shared is accurate in my situation. I am a warrior because I "fight the battle" in my own way on a daily basis, and feel stronger because of the changes I've made! Whatever word we use, it's amazing that we were able to change ourselves with the assistance of the sleeve and tools we've acquired along the way on this journey.

Sometimes, disease is not a person's fault. Diabetes, cancers, altzheimer's sometimes are the cards that we are dealt with. Bad thinking, bad choices can run for generations. How many times I remember shopping at the plus sized store to find a mom and her daughters. I remember before I had surgery that I felt that I had no choices, my life was centered around what I was going to eat. The tool for which I am eternally grateful, has shown me that life can be different. My thoughts and life are totally different because I am no longer starving and craving; the head hunger is another thing but at least I have the choice to think differently. I attended a support group meeting yesterday and a woman spoke of how she literally had a few days before blood clots were going to kill her. She has maintained an over 200 pound loss for over 11 years. Yes warrior is a more powerful term, but by the grace of God, some people survive too,
