Default "I'm not losing fast enough!" (Yes, you are!)

A common complaint among sleeved patients, especially early post-op, is, "I'm not losing fast enough!"

In almost all instances, the truth is that you're losing just fine. Really. I'm not kidding.

People who lose fast, like a few patients do, are usually heavyweights to begin with, men (who have more muscle tissue), and younger people (who may be more active and have a higher metabolism).

I was not a fast loser. Today is my 16-month surgiversary, so I just ran all my monthly weight loss numbers, and they look like this:

    Pre-op losses:
On my own 2-month diet I lost 11 pounds.
    On my surgeon's 2-week diet I lost 8 pounds.

    Post-op losses:
    Months 1-4 - averaged 10.5 pounds/month
    Months 5-8 - averaged 5.6 pounds/month
    Months 9-12 - averaged 2.2 pounds/month
    Months 13-16 - averaged 1.5 pounds/month

My take on all this is that the measure of our long-term success has nothing whatsoever to do with how fast we lose, but whether we create a new, healthier lifestyle post-op and consistently live that lifestyle. The weight loss phases are when we start to build those new lifestyles.

I've now lost 98.2 pounds and think, finally, this is surely the end of my weight loss. My 2016 goals are to add more muscle mass, to continue to increase my walking distance, speed and endurance, and to enjoy again the hiking / trekking life I had decades ago.

We can all reach our goals. But right now, it looks to me like this journey never ends. I cannot see a finish line.

Very helpful, thank you! I was getting discouraged as my surgeon told me I should be weighing myself every day and I wasn't seeing any change. I started the liver reduction at 356 and the day of surgery was weighed in at 330. When I went back for my one week visit I was weighed at 326 although my home scale says 320. I was thinking, shouldn't this be happening quicker than this? I've been at 320 since coming home on December 10. So, this was very encouraging.

I have a bit of work to do on learning the diet overall. I think I still eat too fast. I'm used to eating fast because of having to get back to work. I've cheated today, being my birthday, and had a small Stella D'oro cookie. I shouldn't have, I know, but I consider it my birthday treat. The head hunger has kicked in too. I'm also still having some pain with eating, but I'm only 11 days out.

Thanks so much Ann. You are always so encouraging. This helped a lot I have begun to feel that I am not losing fast enough. I suffer more from head hunger than anything and I agree with you about the lifestyle change. It is just as important, if not more import than the weight loss.

What Ann says is so true. We are all different no 2 people are the same so trying to compare weight loss is more damaging to you then you think. I was a fast loser but I was 313 pounds so of course I lost faster. Never compare yourself to some one else remember this is your body and your journey only you can live it. Your losing at what your body says is right and that is all that matters. Don't stress or be hard on yourself remember you did not gain the weight over night so don't expect it to come off over night.

    Good luck

Thank you Ann..I'm losing slow and keep thinking I might not lose and fail at this whole thing. I've been a little down about it.

I wake up with goals of more protein and more water but then I slip in too many carbs from fruit or sushi....and miss my water marks constantly. I know all I can do is keep trying and SLOWLY my weight loss happens.

I feel as though I still have some bad habits to bresk. I still eat to fast.

I love your post and it makes totally sense. This .is a long term life thing. Nothing happens overnight. ..even if we wish. Lol

Tinactistina - this is exactly the way I feel. More than once I've told my boyfriend, "I feel like I'm never going to lose the weight". Which just makes me depressed. The same thing with the goals. I'm not eating sushi yet as I'm still on soft foods but it seems like no matter what I eat I end up taking in way more fat and carbs than I ever intended.

We will get there, slowly. Just wish it could be faster.

    Thanks Ann great post

I dropped 40 lbs in 6 weeks after surgery and asked the nurse if that was ok. She slapped me on the arm.. Down 100 since my highest weight and 75 in 5 months. I'm 42 years old been overweight/obese my whole life. I'm not going to have the chiseled body I wanted when I was younger. However, I am going to have a healthier body & life.

The stalls are also needed to let your body catch up to the loss. When you look back over time you can see the loss. Go walk outside for thirty minutes turn around and see how far you walked....that is how the weight loss can be as well.

I am almost 9 months post-op and have lost about 65 lbs, so I am like Ann here. I can't thank you enough for this post as I am constantly reminding myself that I am in a race against myself here and no one else. I don't come here very often because I do get discouraged by others who claim to have lost double than I have. I remind myself every day of how lucky I am to be the healthy woman that I am today because of the life saving gastric sleeve surgery. I got my confidence back and no longer feel the need to settle in the dating dept. The only people who remember me at my current weight, is my family and I am blessed to have a large support system. Thank you so much Miss Ann for this encouraging post and for the reminder, that I am not alone.

thank you for this!! I have been yoyoing the last few weeks where one week I will be down then up then down the up all to pretty much stay the same weight though I have been following the lifestyle...it's so irritating! I am trying to be patient with my body and listen to what it needs (having just had surgery from my gallbladder and stuff) and I am trying to realize that I have done super well so far and at 7 months post op being down over 50lbs is a good start

Hi there I'm new here and I'm still pretty confused. I'm 51 6'3" my pre surgery weight was 428 and the day of surgery I weighed in at 399. My surgery was on 1/25. On 2/9 I seen the surgeon and weighed in at 376 putting me down 52 pounds since 12/4/15. From the looks of my numbers I'm doing well but I think things are going to change. If I look at another drop of water I think I'll scream. I simply hate water and I constantly feel bloated and I'm burping like mad, sort of a hiccup burp. The dr said I'm taking in too much air. Who knows. So far I'm happy buy have to wait until my next weigh in to know how I'm doing. I just ordered a scale today but I won't use it until I see the dr so I know if it's accurate. I'll be around with more results. Thanks for being here!
