    Default Relapse

Ah... recently I've been really stressed and relapsed into old eating habits even though I get full after a few bites and I just keep sort of binging and I feel so gross and guilty... I don't have anyone to talk to about this who would understand and I'm trying really hard to think of alternatives to this binging while stressed. I'm officially a year out (my anniversary is Halloween lol) and I feel like I should have this under control but I don't. And it really upsets me.

Anyone have any suggestions or pointers or just a kind word to help lift my spirits because I feel like I'm failing myself!

Malanna, I don't know if you're up for this, but in your sitch I would look for a therapist / counselor to spend some time with to understand better what's happening in your life / head to cause this "relapse."

I'm a huge fan of "Buck up!" and "Just do it!" But I'm an even bigger fan of understanding what's going on and tackling the source of the problem, not just the symptoms. Could be stress -- work, family, seasonal, etc. Could be something completely different causing all this.

Yes, eventually, "Just do it!" is necessary. But in my experience, clearing up the confusion prior to that gives me a lot more horsepower to turn things around.

Very best to you. And welcome to the site.

I'm sorry to hear about your situation. I'm just two weeks post op so I can't give any advice. I am here daily to check on my forum buddies and I can surely pray for you. I may need the very same advice one day. Just know you're not alone.

This is just an insight into my head at that time and it took me another six months to recognize and adjust and get my head straight. For me when I first starting losing weight people noticed and gave you compliments, face it it feels good keeps you motivated, well after you start getting to your goal weight they don't do that anymore. Basically what I had to find out for myself is that I needed to be that motivational voice in my head, after all I did this for myself not for anyone else. My advice is do some soul searching and find out why you are trying to savotage your success. And I agree with Ann maybe find a therapist or just someone you can talk to. This is a crazy journey for all of us and I think we all need to be able to talk about it, this is what keeps me coming back to this forum. I don't post much but I do visit almost everyday and always find something that I can relate to.

I am sorry that you are dealing with this, and that you feel alone.
Maybe start simple? Get those foods out of your house. If you don't have access...then you can't have them?
You worked really hard over the past year, and I believe that you are worth it.

Ah, thank you so much! I'm making a big move (from MN to Philadelphia) and I leave on the 20th of this month so it's probably that. But I do need a counselor in the new city. Anyway, thank you! Your advice helps tremendously!

You're absolutely right about the soul searching! I'm about to take that journey in the next week and I definitely have to remember that I did this for me and nobody else. I do tend to forget that from time to time so thank you so much for the reminder! I'm finding that this forum is incredible and it's so good to finally be able to talk to people who can relate!

CONGRATULATIONS ON MAKING IT TWO WEEKS!!!! My first two weeks after surgery, I was in the hospital because I had a horrible reaction to the anesthesia afterwards but I've never regretted my decision! So I also want to wish you the best of luck and, yeah, the first month with food choices and such is a hard hump/hurdle to get over but, once you do, it gets easier!

I too have relapsed. I think I got too comfortable with the "automatic" weightloss.
I used the excuse that I needed to buy goodies for my son, and of course I started eating them. I was using the excuse that I should be able to eat anything bc the quantities are so small. Obviously I can't. Also around that time, I started to work with a personal trainer. As always I started with the self-destructive behavior - "oh I'm burning so many calories I can have this donut, this cookie,, etc. I haven't been able to correct my thinking so I gave in and started to work with a therapist. I feel really lucky because I am now receiving therapy with the Dr. who has been prescribing my anti-depressants since before my surgery. She knows me AND she used to run the support groups for post-op bariatric patients at a local hospital. It is like I am going to a support group each week. She is going to give me some printed materials she has from when she ran the group. I am so hoping this works, I am 16 lbs from my goal of 160 and 24 lbs from the 100 lb mark,, which is my ultimate goal. Dec 22 is my 1 year anniversary. I've kind of accepted that I won't make either goal by then, but I just need to start losing again.
Best of luck to you. Stress eating is a terrible thing. Moving to a new city is big. You have to allow yourself that and go from there. One thing for me is to NOT have the food in the house. I have 1 candy bar left and then I am done.
my stress is that my husband is going through a very serious health condition and I am in the layoff pool at work and am stressed about not getting a job.
