I am glad I had my surgery, but then I had been battling extra weight and able to keep it in check with dieting and exercising like a fiend for 20 years. Since my early to mid 30s, I have had to diet hard & really struggle. I sort of wrecked my metabolism with the years of dieting, then began the perpetual weight loss, regain & putting back on every ounce I lost and then some. I felt like I blew up completely after back surgery. On my frame I looked like a pumpkin, I was definitely an apple shape.
I understand your concern, at 22 that is pretty young to be resorting to surgery. To me it was a last resort, as I said after the years of yo yo dieting, intense constant exercise, south beach diet, HCG shots, sensa sprinkles, diet pills etc. But bear in mind if she has already tried other ways and failed - it isn't like she is going to stay at this weight she is unhappy at. Likely to keep gaining as time goes on.
You sound like a great Dad. She's lucky to have you to support her no matter what she decides.

She'll do great, especially with your support. Help her out all you can. Be her #1 cheerleader! Switch to healthy eating for your whole family (don't know if she lives with you or not) so when she starts food again you concentrate on protein first and then veggies.

My only regret is not having it sooner. Just think she s gonna step into a new healthier person dodging the bullet of obesity related diseases. Greater self esteem w/o the frustration of yoyo dieting for years. Enjoy her healthier self for years to come. What a good dad she ll have good support! A new world will open up to her. Its not easy but worth it. I like the saying from the movie League of our own when Tom Hanks said "If it was easy everyone would do it" Good luck! Keep us posted tell her we want to see before & after pics of her journey! God speed to a quick recovery! Cant wait to see her sitting on the loosers bench with us.

Back again I figure I don't need that much stomach & don't want it back. That big stomach is what got me in trouble! Its a good thing. Just my own opinion. Tell her best of luck!

My husband had a scope done because there was concern about him having Barttles disease which is where the stomach goes into the esophagus. This increases the chances of esophagus cancer. If he did indeed have the disease, he would have to have gastric bypass because it would be too risky to remove the stomach with the sleeve because if he were to ever get cancer, they rebuild the esophagus with the stomach lining so he would need the stomach. He did not have the disease and should be able to have surgery first part of next year.
I just had my sleeve done. I asked the doctors and surgeons (being that I didn't have the esophagus/acid reflux issues he had) if I were to ever need my stomach tissue for anything medical ever again-the answer was no. There is a trust that is built among he team of people (aka "sales people") but also a trust within your daughter that she needs a tool to be healthy. My mom wasn't 100% on board, never said anything negative either but she had her ways of expressing her views which weren't supportive. I did ALOT of research on it, talked to several doctors and people who have had it and I said-lets do it! Both my parents have been Angels caring for me since Tuesday which was my surgery.
Good luck to the both of you and just know I find it awesome you sought advice and stories of people who have had it!

If you want to do more research look at medical sites, they'll be helpful and straightforward. I think the sleeve is a great option for people who can't lose weight and yo-yo dieters. I'm 43 and have had a weight problem my whole life. I'm just glad that my family has been supportive. I probably would've gotten it done with out their support. Good luck helping your daughter on her journey!!
