Default Not Enough Calories and Protein

Hey everyone...I had a horrible time trying to find a protein shake that I could tolerate and good news I found one...it is nectar 25 gr of protein, tastes not too bad..I am drinking two a day...however the problem is that it is only 25 calories..and even with the broth and jello and Popsicles that is not over 300 calories a day not even that much...I also am having a huge problem with taking my diabetes meds without food it makes me very sick...today at work was so horrible...wanted to throw up all day...any suggestions?

I'd suggest consulting your surgeon and your NUT to see what they have to say about this. Other than that, hold on, it should eventually get better.
had surgery at nordbariatric with prof maleckas in lithuania who helped me become who I am - a much healthier version of myself!

I think you are reading it wrong... Syntrax Nectar is 25 calories and 6-7g protein per 1/4 scoop. So if you are getting 25g protein from it, you are using a full scoop - which is 100 calories. The general rule is that 1g protein = 4 calories. (same with carbs... fat is 9 cal/g).

You dont have to drink it all at once. In the beginning, I would do protein "shots" - i.e. 1/4 scoop in 1-2 oz water. Repeat throughout the day - it can be less daunting than staring at 8oz drink. You dont have to use the recommended amount of water either - you can use less or more to taste. I like the Syntrax Grape stronger, so I can use less water and get more in that way.

Nectar is not 25 calories for 25g of protein, (at least none of the 4 big jars in my house). Double check the serving size. They put 1/4 a serving on the label. To get 25g of protein you need to quad the serving size! One scoop will net you 25ish g of protein but that's 100 calories, not 25. See sample label at his link. https://www.google.com/url?sa=i&rct=...27976737869619

As far as getting more calories... add 1/2 an avocado to a protein shake. It'll make it creamy smooth and you won't taste it. Add cheese sticks as snacks. Use full fat dairy and real eggs. (That one was hard for me, but honestly, it's been FINE). I don't eat enough for it to affect my weight loss in a negative way, I've seen no increase in cholesterol and what I'm getting is REAL, not plastic!

As far as no nut goes, I did my initial required nut counseling with a nut at the local grocery store. Check around. If you're really interested in nut support you can hire one by the 1/2 hour or hour. Choose wisely though, you want someone with experience in baritatics to get the best advice. It's ROUGH getting your nutrition the first month. As you heal and advance your diet it will get easier. I know I kind of had to force it for the first 2 months. NOT hungry at all, but it's important to advance our diets so I looks at it as following my prescription and taking my "medicine".

Don't worry about hurting my feelings because I guarantee you not one bit of my self esteem is tied up in your acceptance.

    We are almost there !!!
I start my actual preop on Friday. I went through major withdrawals when I gave up sugar and sodas a few days ago. It was a horrible day. I hope you are doing better with your preop and make sure you take your needed meds. All this will be over before we know it

How long ago was you surgery? Obviously if you are concerned it may be something that you want to have checked out, but I know that right after surgery my calorie intake was very low as well. It takes a bit for the swelling in you new sleeve to go down after surgery. For a good while once I transitioned onto the solids I could eat a half a piece of toast and that alone would make me feel stuffed. Sometimes with the liquids trying them at different temperatures really helps. Also, after my surgery I drank the Myoplex EAS RTD drinks. The larger ones have 42 grams of protein. I know as someone new to the sleeved side it may be hard to drink them all at first, but what I did was sip on them throughout the day. So long as I could get 2 in it covered my protein needs for the day. If you have just very recently had surgery it can be quite common that you are not physically able to eat any where near you calorie intake that has been set out for you. That does get much better the further that you get out, but maybe you could call your surgeon and see if they have any suggestions that will help your particular case. I know its not much, but I hope this helps. Best wishes on your journey dear!

Use a milk you can tolerate instead of water in your shake. Add pureed banana or avocado. I don't know what your food restrictions are but after surgery your diabetes should be markedly improved (it is for most people) and you will probably need to back off of your medications (WHEN your PCP says so - I am not a doctor.) I have a number of food allergies and was insulin resistant. There are a lot of foods I can't eat but you get creative. You will find that your tummy can hold more after the first couple weeks. Those first couple weeks just keeping hydrated and trying to meet protein goals is the biggest challenge. It does get easier.

p.s. I use organic soy - I can hear people screaming about soy but I was doing almond or coconut and my dietician said to use the organic soy since it adds protein and not too many carbs (but in your case I think you need a few more carbs than you are getting with the water and nectar.) Again - these are my suggestions - not a medical professional. Just some ideas to spark you . Good luck!
