I think it's a fair point you raise. However, as has been stated, no surgery is risk free. But what is the risk of staying where you are? Cancer, heart disease, diabetes (the latter of which can cause blindness.).

The best result is to eat just 1 000 calories a day. Then you won't need surgery. There... it only took me ten seconds to write. But doing it is much more difficult for a thousand reasons you will find on this forum.

I won't have a lap band because of the risk of complications. But I am determinded to have a sleeve. Because I don't want the risks of where I am now.

Make your own mind up. But I would not be put off by just one or two horror stories. If you see a pattern emerging, fine. But is two horror stories a tend?

My wife has been against me being sleeved because of the risk of surgery. But she insisted that I have a vasectomy without a second's thought. Even though I had the kind of infections which still give me a shudder (I won't say cross my legs, as that wasn't an option at the time).

So I went to hell and back on that. But, now it's cured, I love the benefits. Overall, it was worth it. I hope my sleeve will eventually do the same thing, when I can afford it.

Make your own, informed decision, dear friend.

    I wish you well.
    Reason: repitition.

Look at my weight-loss. No one understands WLS unless they have had it. Everyone here that is posting is alive...
Everyone I knew was against me having surgery accept someone who had this done years ago. Staying the way you are is WAY more dangerous. My Sleeve was done as a outpatient. I was in at 7am home at 3:330pm. Now every one says this is the best thing I have ever done. This is a gift. Go get your life back.

Not sure where YOUR negativity comes from nor do I care. Everyone is allowed an opinion and if you don't like it,that's unfortunate but its life. Please do not respond to any more posts of mine on someone elses page, you may message me privately with further questions (Appologies, Noha)

I was done, HH, until your last message to me. I don't respond well to demands. If you drop it I won't respond. If you keep it up I will. Your choice. Personally, though, if you have anything further to say to me I'd suggest you take your own advice and PM me.

I'm glad you apologized to Noha, however, for hijacking her thread by calling her negative, though. If you truly want to be supportive I'd avoid making remarks like that in the future. Part of being positive is not calling other people negative for merely expressing their fears.

Noha, I apologize, I was feeling protective of you...we are often in a vulnerable place when we express our fears.

    Peace,

    D.

Perhaps HH and Deelite should just drop it and move on. We all have our own stories and our own points of views. But this is a support site and not a slanging match site.

Noha, I hope all the comments have helped ease your mind and you're back to feeling good about your decision. There are so many of us on here that have changed our lives through the Sleeve or Bypass or Band (we're all in the same WLS boat and should support each other) We very much look forward to welcoming you to the losers bench.
Good luck and keep us posted.

yes, less bickering, more supporting... lol.. i think most of our threads we start is pretty emotional and personal- so it's natural that the emotions run high and every vocabulary is dissected and evaluated.. the important thing is that we are all trying to lead a happy healthy life and we all need information and education and this is the site that can provide that and more.. (such as friendship.. we all have doubts and fears- but leave it up to God and he will take care of you..

    1) Talk with your surgeon before hand and ask about what he/she does the ensure there are no leaks and how they test for leaks. Do they just staple, or do they staple and sew over? Do they just do leak tests during surgery, or will you also have a swallow test before being allowed to start consuming liquids?

    2) Any surgery/anesthesia poses risks and complications. Make sure you have an open dialogue and easy contact with your surgeon and primary physician to deal with anything that may come up after the fact. Any extreme pain, fever, vomiting needs to be reported immediately. Also, there have been some cases here in NYC that were in the news where there were deaths due to dehydration after WSL, so it is very important to try to drink after surgery, even if you have a bit of pain or don't feel like drinking otherwise. And if you're not getting enough fluid, then at the very least you should be drinking something like Gatorade when you are drinking.

In all seriousness - unusual for me, I know - email and written text can often lead to misunderstandings. A kindly tone in the voice can often take out much of the harshness of criticism; likewise a smile can add charm. You don't get those advantages with a forum like this.

I also find it difficult....... when people do this........ becuase i know......... that i look for a............. mixture of upper and......... lowercase characters....... to read.

The result is that I just ignore them. Life's too short. Which is a pity really, because the colleague might be saying something rather profound.

Noha - I am glad you shared your fears with us! We all have had them, all been there - some of us already, some going through it now, some will be coming to it soon enough - and they will be glad you asked so they dont have to

I dont think there is any surgery you could have where there isnt a story of someone dying somewhere. Appendix out, tonsils out, etc. Surgery carries risk of course - there is a reason they literally make you "sign your life away" when you enter the hospital. The stories I heard right before mine were - one person died from the portion of the surgery where they fixed a hernia before they were going to start her actual WLS surgery (doing both at same time, but never got to the second part), and another died during a bypass but it was from the anesthesia - it wound not have mattered if she were having surgery on her foot or her tonsils out, she still would have died.

Every surgery is a weighing of pros and cons that is different for every person and circumstance. Someone on this board wrote something I copied and posted on my desk - “Time has taught us all that we will change when the circumstances we are in become more uncomfortable than the unknown we may encounter. “ When the benefits are more important and more urgent to you than the risks of both surgery and the risk of doing nothing about your weight, you will have the surgery. If they are not, they you wont. This surgery and other WLS have saved many, many, many more lives than they have taken.

And there is something to be said for following directions. They tell us about the pre-op diet because they know that a smaller liver makes for less risk in surgery. Ignoring that raises your risk. So if you decide to go through with the surgery, the amount of *additional* risk you face is somewhat up to you! Do everything they tell you... and if they ask if you didnt, be completely honest! If you had a hamburger during the time you were supposed to be liquids only before the surgery, you dont do yourself or them any favors at all by lying about it regardless of how embarrassed you may be to admit it. It will rarely stop the surgery, but it keeps the surgeon from being blindsided - which is always a good thing.

Keep talking! Bring all your concerns here! I love that this board is so friendly - and there have been a few times (very few!) where I read a question and thought "Thats pretty stupid... " or "Thats been answered on here a 100 times - didnt that person read any of the forum first?" but I am always amazed by the kindness of the answers that people give (I just dont post on those - my ego doesnt need to know that they understand how I feel about it... especially since I dont even know them). I have even been "corrected" sometimes by reading the responses - what I thought was a stupid question was actually not, I just read it too fast or thought I knew more than I did... Humbling, but I certainly can use a little humility every now and then.

Good luck on your decision! Keep us informed of what you decide!

    HI Noha,
I am kind of HORROR struck as well. I am supposed to have my surgery in Nov. and I have been approved by insurance but, i still get really scared sometimes. I did have a very good friend that passed away after gastric bypass, not the sleeve tho because she just was not able to get the nutrients she needed. I am a nurse and I have also cared for several patients that were GASTRIC BYPASS and not the sleeve that have came very close to death because of sepsis. I keep trying to tell myself that the sleeve is safer, but I saw my surgeon yesterday and he said it is more dangerous than the bypass, however in my medical career it has always been the bypass patients that have seemed to have trouble and not the sleeve patients. I try to chalk up my off and on fear to that I am a nurse and know what can go wrong but I am still worried. It seems tho that most people here on the forum have for the very most part really good experiences and I did speak with some of my surgeons patients and all were very pleased. I think yours and my problem is we may listen more to the negative than the positive. I don't really know, what is your opinion. Maybe since it looks like the two of us are the "scaredy cats" here, we could try to be really good support for each other and try to focus on the positive???????
I would really love to become a friend if that is OK???
Please let me know how you are doing, and I will be thinking of you.

    Be Strong,
    Katie

Not to get off on a side track here, but that doesn't make much sense to me -- that the sleeve is more dangerous than a bypass. With the sleeve, all that is done is that a portion of the stomach is resected. With the bypass, the stomach is resected, the small intestine is detached and reattached. Obviously sticking the intestine where is was not naturally intended is just another opportunity for leaks, infection, etc. Makes no logical sense to me.

Absolutely. I just finished reading Dr. Alvarez' book tonight, and confirmed some of the information on the web. The bypass is riskier because more cutting is involved. Not only is the stomach sleeved or made into a pouch, but the intestines are cut and reattached in two places. So, it make sense that the bypass and the DS are riskier. Even after healing, with a bypass or DS there is the lifelong risk of malabsoption and therefore, malnutrition.
