    Default I cheated

I got sleeved on Feburary 26 2015 ,like must of you out there My doctor had me on the dreaded 2 week prep diet. That was probably the hardest and if im going to be honest with everyone YES I CHEATED , I have read people getting bashed because of the fact that they were not taken their weight loss seriously and that this is a life change and im sure like a few people out there I was on this website looking for permission to cheat. I had it in my head that my my friend had just had the operation a year ago and didnt have to do it and I new of a few other people that didnt have to do the diet. So I stood to it as close to it as possible and that was the best I could do. My surgery went beautiful I woke up in recovery in the amounted time BUT!!!!!!! I had the worst gas pain, the worst heartburn ,The worst acid reflux I tell you all this not to scare you but I do think that if I dieted correctly I dont think I would of had as many problems.(But thats just my guess) I ended up staying an extra day in the hospital and they sent me home with anti nauseous medicine and acid reflux . I am just on the acid one and after last night being my first goodnight sleep I feel great. It is so nice to finally have food not be a issue and also nice to finally feel like your full again. I am an emotional eater and have also been working on loving myself enough not to have to go to food. This has been a great experience ,im enjoying the journey and please try not to beat yourself up to much. Good Luck to everyone.

    Congratulations on your surgery.
Be careful of being an "emotional eater", I am a "stress eater" myself. Just have alternatives other than reaching for food when you are emotionally under pressure. You can do it!

No one should bash you for a little cheating, you are human.
Sometimes people are a little outspoken here because they are concerned someone is going to defeat the sleeve or cause possible harm to themselves; kind of like tough love.

Inside some of us is a thin person struggling to get out, but they can usually be sedated with a few pieces of chocolate cake.

This is the intenet. You know, the place where underinformed people have extremely strong opinions and fervently argue about subjects they know almost nothing about. Unfortunately you just have to weed through all of the b.s. to find the occassional nugget of good information that may actually be applicable to you.

But Honestly.. Who cares what a bunch of strangers online think anyway?

Chrissy, I would love to see someone who didn't deviate in some way from that diet. Mine was 3 shakes, plus a frozen dinner (Smart Ones, WW, etc). I have an aversion to frozen foods, so I drank my shakes and ate smaller portions of whatever I wanted for dinner. Glad you got a good night's sleep. Best of luck to you.

I was instructed to be on a general "lower carb" south beach type diet prior to surgery and didn't lose any weight. My BMI was 40 - so maybe that played a part or maybe that is just my doctor's approach. Basically I cut out crap, ate lean protein and fruits and veg and my doctor did suggest I hydrate as much as possible in the days leading up to surgery. I did give up caffeine and pop prior to surgery. It took me about 6 weeks to do this. I only did liquids the day before and then fasted after midnight the night before. I had no throwing up, no complications (aside from some skin rashes) but hardly any gas and I have not taken any antacids and am 3 months post op. I think we are all just different. I went on vacation prior to my surgery and I had a couple of rich meals as it was the holidays (but ate very little quantity-wise.) I'm not saying this to give permission for people to not follow their doctor's advice but to illustrate how different we are as individuals. You might follow everything - even the strictest of instructions and diet - and still have more issues than someone else but following the instructions will minimize any risks of complication. I hope this makes sense.

I've not had my surgery yet but I've been told that the heartburn and nausea is quite common whether you've cheated on the pre-op diet or not. During my nutritional education class, we were told the reason for the strict diet before surgery is so your liver won't be as "fatty", making it easier to manipulate and move out of the way during the gastrectomy part.
Yes, we are all different, all of us are stiving for the same things here... loss of weight, gain better health. WE can do this!! Best of luck to us all!

Congrats on your success. I too cheated a little on the pre op diet. I was very faithful but 2 days before surgery (because I didn't want to do it the day before) I took a day off. Had sausage and eggs for breakfast, a burger and fries for lunch, and pizza for dinner. I just wanted a last hurrah before surgery. I still lost 12 pounds pre op and everything went fine. Now I am sleeved, feeling great, and have no regrets.
