I am curious to know how life is after getting sleeved????
Wondering what thoughts are on enjoying beverages of the alcoholic nature. What can you drink after as opposed to what you enjoyed before the sleeve
I had my surgery with Dr Almanza, and my instructions were no alcohol for 6 weeks and no carbonated beverages for 6 months. At 6 weeks, I had a glass of wine and had some pretty bad heartburn, but that has lessened and I drink wine at times and I have vodka and cranberry juice if we go out. Doesn't bother me but I am sure a cheap drunk!!! LOL!
Lol cheap drunk, I just want to still at least be able enjoy. Obviously my choice of beverage will have to change though. How long ago did you have surgery?
Any advice things you think will be helpful to know. I'm trying to plan things to have at home.
What would you suggest having on hand for clear liquid stage other than obvious things. How do you get protein in that phase.
I mean seems to me broth and juices sugare free jello zilch on protein so what should I gET
i was told to restrict the caffeine to maybe a glass of coffee a cup of tea no alcohol for one year and no carbination of any kind for the rest of your life cause it can cause your stomach to stretch out so i knocked out soda from my diet two months before surgery and sugar so i would not have withdrawls from it while recovering from surgery

Alcohol affects people in various ways post-op. Some get blitzed. Some don't feel its effects anymore.
Alcohol affects me a little more strongly and faster than it used to. So when I drink these days, I drink more slowly -- like 3-4 ounces of wine over 2 hours. And, as with eating out, no one else really notices what or how much or how fast I'm drinking.
Other post-op patients will surely have had different experiences, however.

I don't drink but my only comments on this issue is that booze is empty calories and if you drink too much of course (you have 1/4 of your stomach now of course so you will get the effects alot faster I would assume) then your inhibitions are down so you might say to hell with it I want a pizza. I know several people with either the lapband, sleeve and bypass that are all drinkers and they gained nearly all of their weight back and then some. Why tempt fate? If you have to drink do as Ann does - a few ounces of wine over a longer period of time.
I drink alcohol, carbonated beverages, and caffeine. I guess I'm a rebel. A regular sized rebel that is. Everything in moderation in my book.
(Now that's not a whole lot of alcohol, carbonated beverages, and caffeine, but I drink it.)
Hubby was told no carbonated soda for the rest of our sleeved lives. Because of the carbonation causes/or can cause the stretching. Caffeine to a limit, and alcohol as well. but to each his own. Hubby and I loved our wine, but he only tasted a bit of mine when we went out. I stopped drinking alcohol, sodas, and limited myself to one cup of coffee... just to get ready for this. I don't want to be missing any of those things!
What I am having trouble with is not being able to eat and drink at same time. Pre surgery only time I have alcohol is when I went out to eat. Now I have to choose do I want to have a drink or eat. I have only chosen alcohol one time so far. It was a glass of wine, and did feel a bit tipsy.
My nutritionist is fine with 1 cup of tea or coffee daily. Alcohol is ok but with limits. You will have to see what works for you. Last time we went to a nice restaurant, I ordered Sangria. The drink was so big it was a waste of money. If I drank it I would never have eaten anything. I will share my drinks with someone else when we go out. Not a big drinker anyway, so real no issues with it. I do love Sangria though!! I do drink soda, but I mix the carbonation out. Diet 7 up is my favorite. I drink much more when I use a straw. Nutritionist said that is fine at this point. They don't want us to use a straw in the beginning because we suck in too much air.
I attended a wedding 5 months post op. I had no issues with alcohol as far as getting drunk faster. I did catch a buzz, but it was more the fact I don't drink as often. I get full fast, but if I pace myself I can put them away. As far a soda. Only if mixed with Rum. Caffeine, I drink coffee everyday since surgery. No issues at all.
On the rare occasion when I have a drink I think of it as food so I don't worry about drinking while I eat. A few sips of cab is nice with my small piece of steak. Wine does not taste the same to me even this far out. So unless I'm in a social setting I never drink. A bloody Mary has become my drink of choice, but I rarely indulge. It just has lost its appeal for me. If you have already lost a substantial amount of weight be prepared to be affected more quickly and more strongly than pre op! As a side note I think drinking alcohol on an empty stomach is a bad idea and a quick way to make a fool of yourself. As others have already said, no one really pays that much attention to what we do. I think as long as you don't make a big deal about it no one really notices how much you do or don't drink. So if I'm out at a party or nice dinner I get what everyone else is having, take a few sips and I'm done. I am not opposed to alcohol or the occasional indulgence, I just think of it as my sleeve doing its thing and keeping the serving really small. As with any new food, proceed with caution and you might try it first at home in a small amount to see how you do. I also want to mention the shift in thinking I have undergone concerning going out to eat. In my pre op day it was about the quality and enjoyment of what was consumed. But now its all about the quality of the company and conversation, the atmosphere and the opportunity to get dressed up get out of the house. It is a completely different mindset!
I haven't found it limiting at all. I drank nothing but water for three months, mainly through choice. No one has told me to restrict anything, so I'm enjoying a daily Diet Coke again (it's Summer here), drink wine once a week (About 1 1/2 bottles, but then I've always had a very high tolerance for a woman, partly the culture of London where I used to live, and NZ where I live now), and have 1-2 cups of tea (with sugar! Gasp!) in the Winter. I never was much of a beer drinker, but very gassy drinks are not a lot of fun to drink, I find. I'm just trying to limit the diet cokes as they're bad for the enamel on my teeth - I used to drink 3-4 a day in Summer. All good otherwise, and I'm finding it easy to maintain my weight loss :-)
