Default UK - How much did yours cost?

    Hi

I'm trying to find a reasonable price for a sleeve, located as near to Blackpool in the UK as I can get.

Marcus from Landauer has quoted £8,500 but that's Manchester. Is this average? He also said that he would only recommend one specific surgeon (can't remember his name). Marcus almost used scare tactics about how bad other surgeons were and how they had to fix others botch up jobs.

My bmi is 38 has anyone had it done on nhs with same bmi? I've got osteoarthritis, sleep apnoea, hypothyroidism and hashimotos thyroiditis.

If nhs won't do it I'll need finance for it - can anyone tell me who they used for this?

I emailed Blackpool Spire twice but they haven't replied.

    Regards
    Michelle

You might consider coming to America, several really good options in Las Vegas. I had surgery in Nashville KY, several tell me the doc there is the best in the nation. I realize some will argue that, I am not asserting that, just talking.

I paid $18,300, or just under £12K, I think price should NOT be your primary concern. How long will you stay in the hospital? Will there be follow up? You will need blood work post op to check vitamin levels and the like, will that be covered? What is their error rate, death rate, etc. Yes, people do die from this, so its not something to go cheap on.

There's no need to go to the states as you won't have the aftercare and it will cost you more.

I had my surgery in the UK and it was £10K. That seems about usual talking to various people I've met on here. There's some companies that will do finance if you need it.

Regarding on the NHS, my understanding is that the NICE Guidelines for bariatric surgery is 35+ BMI if you have significant co-morbidities - which you have. It will take much longer, but it's worth it if you can't afford to go private. Of course if you go NHS you also get less choice re surgeon etc. Find out about what your local bariatric service is in your catchment. Start talking with your GP now - and if there's several GPs at your surgery find one who truly supports the idea of the surgery for you because you may need them in your corner if funding or access becomes an issue.

Also - as an NHS employee myself - you may find there's a bit of a postcode lottery given that there's limited NHS funding. BUT, if you're prepared to write to your local CCG (Clinical Commissioning Group) and quote the NICE Guidelines you'll often find they will fund on an individual basis.

A final point - I don't know if all bariatric services yet offer the sleeve. That might be something else you need to argue for if your local surgeons favour the bypass and you want the sleeve. Arm yourself with the large meta-analyses done by the US bariatric surgeons which show equivalent weight loss outcomes and lower complications. If you look through all my blog posts you'll find that I've got some links in some of the earlier posts about sleeve versus bypass. You may really need to be a good advocate for yourself so prepare yourself for that.

    Good luck!

I paid £10k to have my sleeve. (In Taunton - so quite a trip for you!) £8500 sounds like the cheapest I've come across in the UK.

MY BMI was 39 before surgery. A doctor said I had a case to apply through the NHS but timing was, for me, more important to sort out than the finance.

In my experience, phone calls stand a better chance of success than emails.

Male, age 46, 6'1" tall. Starting BMI was 39 at 2 weeks pre-op. My weight loss chart.
    BMI=35 at 3 weeks post-op! BMI=30 at 15 weeks post-op! BMI=25 at 9 months post-op!
Reached ultimate goal within 5 months of surgery: free of all prescription medicines! My blog.

I am paying 4000 usd so £2800 in Mexico I'm from the UK but one of my friends has had surgury with great results so I feel confident as I'm having the same surgeon / hospital
Even with flights it's still and a 10day holiday in San Diego it's cost £5000 which is still way cheaper than the UK
I'm also a low BMI but still struggled with weight loss over the years

    Mon 20th /06/ 2016 190 lbs

That price is insane! I paid $14,000 in the states with no insurance, which included before and after care. No wonder our US insurance premiums are so high. Glad you had insurance.
