Default New Sleever - Surgery scheduled for early February 2015

Hello, everyone! I'm 5'1, 220 pounds (BMI of 42) and scheduled to undergo the VSG procedure on February 2nd. Here's my story:

I'm a classic yo-yo dieter who can lose significant amounts of weight through diet and exercise, but simply cannot keep it off. I'll be 34 years old a few days after the surgery. I chose the gastric sleeve over the lap band for a couple of reasons.

    1. I have hypothyroidism and insulin resistance, two metabolic conditions that make losing weight somewhat hard and gaining weight too easy.

    2. Most of the people I know who have been banded lost only a modest amount of weight (20 to 40 pounds) before regaining all the lost weight through eating 'slider' foods. Apparently the lap band didn't take their hunger pangs away.

I am fully aware that the surgery is not a cure-all and that I will need to devote a great deal of effort to lose and keep it off, but I am ready to give it my all. Thanks for listening. I am glad to be part of this supportive group.

Welcome! I am also now scheduled for 2/2 (with a birthday one week after surgery - fun, eh?)

Sounds like your head is in a good place and that you're ready for this. Do they have you on a pre-op diet or instructions and, if so, how's that going?

I started the pre-op diet last night. My surgeon puts all candidates on a two-week pre-op diet consisting of protein shakes and canned soups.

I already have a headache because I am withdrawing from my usual high level of carb intake. I just ate a can of chicken tortilla soup (200 calories) a few minutes ago. It had 16 carbs, which will hopefully be enough to ease this annoying headache.

It's tough being insulin-resistant due to the constant head hunger, but I'm going to make this pre-op diet period work.

I'm on the pre-op diet too, day 2. I'm cranky but working through it, lol. I hope the headaches (and the head hunger) gets a little easier for you as the days go by! Did you find a good protein shake you like? I'm still searching!

I like the Atkins cafe caramel shakes. They taste decent and palatable, considering they only have 1 gram of sugar. I am going to try the AdvantEdge shakes from WalMart tonight.
