Default Anyone else go home the same day?

I'm just wondering if anyone else was home the same day. I had to be at the hospital for check in at 5:00 am. I went in for surgery at 8:30. I went to recovery around 12:15. I went to my room 2:30. By 4:00 I was doing my barium swallow and ct scan checking for leaks. I was discharged around 7:00 pm. Pretty crazy since I had a lap band taken out and then the sleeve. I honestly think I should have stayed at least one night. I stayed one night for a hysterectomy and gallbladder surgeries. I think they could have managed my pain and nausea better through my IV. Instead I was given pills that I have to break up and struggle with swallowing. Why not a pain patch and nausea patch to give my stomach a break? Not to mention them forcing that barium swallow so soon that it took everything I had to get that down. Anyone else go through this type of thing?

Wow and thats bad. I could not even sip any liquid at all on the first day and I only remember sleeping and feeling terrible. The day after I felt bad but did exercise. I cannot imagine how hard it must be to go home that soon. If this is how its going, next they will be doing these surgeries via drive thru service. Perhaps they could just add another window after the KFC window so you can pick up your dried chicken and then at the next window get a gastric sleeve.

Better yet, perhaps you could just choose a specific lane on the freeway and then it takes you though a kind of robot toll booth where they do the gastric sleeve at 55 MPH so you can get it on the commute to work at your job at the pogo stick testing factory?

It all seems a bit fast to me.

I stayed 24 hours, and was surprised how quickly I went home. That blows my mind they had you go home the same day! I'm sure somewhere there were "reasons" but I would think they could have least had you for 24 hrs.

I did my sleeve as an out patient. My dr came and visited me the next 2 days to make sure I was recovering well. I did great. The first 24 hours were the worst. The first week was rough, but by the second week I was feeling much more like myself. I will say I had a scopolamine patch for nausea and liquid pain meds. Perhaps you could call your surgeon and ask if those would be appropriate for you? I do think I was able to rest much better not being in the hospital! Hang in there! It will get better!

My doctor uses an outpatient surgery center and the expectation is that I'll go home the same day. He said that they'll keep me if there are any issues whatsoever, though.

Day 2 is much better so far this morning. I can definitely drink fluids easier than yesterday. I'm still really sore where my I incision sites are. I would definitely ask for any medications the first week to be in liquid, dissolving, or patch form. I'm struggling through it. My antacid is a dissolving tablet. My nausea and pain medications are to be swallowed. I'm using a pill cutter for those. It's hard for me to get good sleep. I was up most of last night because I couldn't get comfortable. I haven't thought "Oh no what have I done" yet. Lol I'm literally sending my husband out to find a recliner today. I think that should do the trick tonight.

Glad to hear your feeling better! I have my meds already just need to fill them, I didnt look to see if they are liquids or not. I know I got toridol for pain and zofran and phenergan for nausea and also have to take a blood thinner shot for two weeks and some kind of patch to put behind my ear prior to surgery? not sure hat that is for either... Im al little worried that I am having a surgery and not being prescribed a narcotic pain med but I have some extras of my own at home if needed in pill form.. and I do have a recliner!! so thanks for that info. Very helpful. I hope you get some rest tonight! Keep us posted!

They had us stay the night in the hospital for observation, and released us the next day, but we still had to do IV's with the pain meds, nausea meds, and antibiotics 2-3 times. Didn't have our leak test until day 3 after we had been able to eat. Luckily I didn't need the pain or nausea pills they gave, but I did make sure to have plenty of GasX strip on hand. . . The day after surgery we were out walking around and shopping, so pain was minimal.

    1 month pre op - 310 lbs
5 days pre op - 295 lbs (15 lbs down!!)
Day of surgery- 285 lbs (25 lbs down!!)
Current weight 135 lbs (175 lbs down!!)

Mine was outpatient as well. I used the same surgeon as Reading Mom. I was kind of scared beforehand, but it really turned out great. I was able to rest on my own schedule without someone coming in at odd hours bothering me. Made the cost a lot cheaper too! Best wishes to you on your new journey!
