    Unhappy fatty liver ????

Ok I am done with all my preop testing and my last test was sono of gall bladder, liver. I was told there was no abnormalities however I have a fatty liver. This scared me a bit. I guess I shouldn't be surprised after all I am overweight-but I had no idea. On blood test my liver function is always normal. Does anyone know about this or experienced this - please share. I am just hoping this will not stop my surgery in any way. Worried.

It's when fat accumulates in the liver cells . It is reversible. This is why a lot of doctors will put there patients on a pre op diet. Losing some weight before surgery will help reduce the fatty liver. My doctor told me that when liver is fatty it becomes much more harder like a rock and it makes it harder to move out of the way for surgery.

It's nothing to be scared about. I've been there and done that.
The liver has a slight chance of being traumatized during the procedure. A smaller liver minimizes this. A fat (sorry for dropping the "F-bomb" word) person will have a fattier liver.
The pre-op diet shrinks it, helps you to lose weight which gives the surgeon more room to work and as a bonus the weight you lose helps you towards your goal.

See the surgery video I posted here:

Sadly, our bodies gain weight where we can see it and also in places that we don't even think about. It is interesting to watch surgeons "free" the livers from their fatty caves. They actually melt the fat off with something that looks like a hair straightener ( I know this is graphic, but it is what happens to us). I remember asking once why we couldn't just suction that fat right out. I mean, you should see how much needs to come off the stomach before they can do their work! IT is not possible or safe to just remove fat, and I was just really kidding (wishful thinking). Often this huge clamp is used to hold the liver back because it is just too much for the students or assistants to grasp with any success.

Thing is, it is not always without consequences. Thankfully, we are working to get our livers and bodies back into shape. But, someone who remains with a fatty liver may risk eventually getting NASH or nonalcoholic steatohepatisis. This is a form of scarring of the liver that eventually, well, destroys it. So here's to healthy livers!!! I have seen a picture of my fatty liver and I am routing for her to get better!

I posted this link separately; https://www.niddk.nih.gov/health-inf...ase/nafld-nash but here it is for you.

I had a liver biopsy in 1989 (before you were born, lol) and I've had issues/pain with it off and on. BUT since my surgery, nope. And it was "good looking" for my surgery after the 2 weeks of pre op stuff.

I do not do alchohol, and acetaminophen (tylenol) gives me fits; some drugs don't easily clear the liver. But highly individual.

That is why many doctors do the pre op diet....to shrink the fatty liver. Nothing unusual.

My surgeon told me that everyone who is overweight has a fatty liver - that's just how it is. Nothing "abnormal" as such. Hence the pre op diet to help shrink the liver to make the surgery easier. She also said that she could tell when she was doing the surgery if someone hadn't followed the pre op diet to the letter. I wanted to make sure that I gave myself the best chance so did everything by the book.
