    Default Pain

Hi everyone. I just had my surgery five days ago and was released from the hospital two days ago. So far I have lost eleven pounds. I started at 284 and I now weigh in at 273. That's the good news. The bad news is that I am in a great deal of pain. I was in a great deal of pain while I was recuperating in the hospital. I was told that was normal. I have been prescribed hydromorphone 2 mg every 3-4 hours but it is not covering the pain. Is it normal to be in so much pain? Thank you.

Hi, Well I don't know if it is normal. I didn't have any pain at all. I wasn't even prescribed pain killers when I was released from the hospital. So I am not sure why you are in such pain. Have you asked your doctor? I think you should.
    Hope everything gets better.

You should Not be in that much pain! You should talk with your doctor or go to the ER. I have not yet had it but I have read alot of post and none of them say they were in a great amount of pain. Where did you have it done?

I didn't have any pain but then everyone is different. My doctor told me that some do experience pain but it's rare. But he also told me that if you need serious pain meds he would prescribe them. Did your doctor do an xray on you before you left the hospital to make sure everything was alright with your surgery? If you're having a lot of pain you may want to notify the office where you had your procedure done. Lorna

I decided to just up the pain med dosage. I went online and a small dosage increase seems to be safe.

I am sorry to hear about you being in pain. The only time I was in any pain, was when I breifly woke up in recovery. That sucked! But it once I was out of recovery, I was fine. Just soreness. I even stopped taking my pain meds the day I left. Keep us posted, and I hope everything is fine.

    Hi Tallguy,

Sorry to hear that you are in so much pain. Like others here have said I was completely off medication as soon as I was able to stand and walk around. Are you moving enough?

Take your pain meds and as soon as they begin to work go for a walk. The more you move the better. Also icepacks really help. When you are sat, sit with an icepack on your tummy. It is very soothing and helps a lot.

I had a lot of traveling to do to get home but even then it was more low level discomfort and certainly not enough to take any pain medication at all.

    Hope you recover soon.
    Gal xx

As of now the pain has been severely reduced and is now being covered by the meds at the prescribed dosage. Also, I have an appointment to see my Dr this week so hopefully everything will work out.

I JUST GOT HOME ON SATURDAY TALLGUY.. I HAVE THE EXACT SAME PRESCRIPTION AS YOU AND SAME MILLIGRAMS

I was in alot of pain in the hospital as well, hitting the button for the nurse every 2-4 hours, and my doctor told me before he released me, that i could take 1-2 of the pain pills (every four hours)when i got home.. so do not worry, you are not alone. I had my surgery on Nov 30th , and i stayed in hospital for four days. we should keep in touch. i have not even bothered to weight myself as i feel swollen and dont really care to know my weight at this point. i will see my doctor on thurs and i hope they will be taking out the
JP drain then.. Most important thing my doctor said was do not sit at home and be in pain, because i was worried about taking to much or taking it to often. Today i actually got to take only one pill at a time, but four hours later i felt like i needed 2, just try to feel it out and see what works for you.
    hope that helps

It is so good to hear that I'm not the only one who experienced pain after surgery lol. Today I feel much less pain than I did previously so hopefully that will buoy your spirits. It's funny you mentioned the JP drain. A resident (doctor) said it would staying in for another week. A few minutes later a nurse came in and said she was there to remove the JP drain. I told her what the Dr said and she said ignore him, he doesn't know what he's talking about. So she yanked it out. A few minutes after that, another nurse came in to advise me that I would be getting the drain out in about a week!
