Default Re: Anyone else only required to do a 2 day pre op diet?

Pre-op diets will vary from doctor to doctor, and patient to patient for the most part. Some say that the purpose of the pre-op diet is to shrink the liver and decrease the chances of it possibly being nicked during surgery. Others say that it is to get you and head start and practice on controlling your eating habits, and easing you into to how food consumption changes so drastically post op. I have seen many people who only required a few days of post op before surgery.

If it is something that you are concerned or have questions about, just call you doctor and ask him about it. I am sure he would be happy to explain his reasoning for your pre-op diet instructions.

There are so many different pre op requirements ...... I am having my surgery on NHS in the UK. I have been given a choice of a 2 week pre-op diet of either a milk only based diet, a special liquid diet (Optifast or similar) or a strict low carbs low fat low sugar food based diet. I went for the food based diet because I don't think I could do the others without cheating. Also I wanted to engage myself in totally thinking about the foods I am eating & making proper choices. I am still finding it hard though ,& craving the missing carbs like crazy !!!! Has anyone else been given a food based plan & how did you cope?

I only had to do 2 day liquid diet but, I had to lose 75 pounds before I had my surgery. My surgeon said that was to shrink my liver so I could avoid the 2 week liquid diet. I didn't have any problems with my surgery from just doing a 2 day liquid. good luck to you!!!!

I couldn't stick to mine so I said "Screw it". I ate like a pig the night before. My surgeon was aware and said that if the liver needed to be moved if it was too big he has an instrument that could do that.

I am having my surgery in less than a week and my MD has no dietary restrictions nor had any weight loss requirements prior to surgery.... Not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing... I gained 7 pounds getting myself sick of my favorite foods over the last three months.. there is nothing left that I crave.. After surgery I have a 2 week full liquid diet, 2 week pureed, then at four weeks I can start integrating regular food into my diet. I have to admit I am getting nervous about it as the days get closer...
