So my mom had surgery about 1 month ago and she is having some problems we are wondering if anyone else has had to deal with similar issues or have any advice.
So the main problem she is having is she can not drink enough water so she is dehydrated she drinks all day but she is always full. She is only drinking about half so she is always light headed. Second she can not handle real food yet she is still eating week 3 diet but she is sick of eating the same things so she has been eating things not so good for her just because she can eat it and it don't make her sick (like cheese sticks) I know it is bad so I tell her not to but she is sad because she misses food and she still can't even eat hardly any solid foods overall she does eat right most of the time but I'm sure some of you guys can relate? Anyway what I'm asking is what do you all do to get the amount of water you need and does anyone have any food ideas following week 3/4 diet that's not just eggs or yogurt ect. Thanks from us both

Oh and she can only eat like 2/3 times a day because she is always full and she only eats a tiny bit.

Hi Vicky (and her Kid),
I haven't had my surgery yet but I do know that it is very serious to be drinking so little for an entire month. Does your Doctor know about this? Maybe you need to contact him or your Primary Care doctor to see about getting the necessary fluids.

Laughing cow cheese wedges, oatmeal, soup puréed especially chilli from a can as it's high in protein, try very thin 97% lean lunch meat! cream of wheat.
Any of these are better than eating things that are too early on her diet. Be patient it gets better but she must get more water in. Ask your surgeon if you can use a straw. Some are ok with straws and can help get more liquid in if needed

Newu2014 thanks she can't do a lot of soups specially with veggies or meat but the view cheese is something she had been eating she can't drink through a straw became she can get to much air I guess ? But thanks for the ideas and the motivational words she Needs it right now she is really having regrets but I know it will get better.....Beth pets she has talked to her doctor and gotten his advice just looking to see if anyone else is having these issues. She is very fortunate to have a caring child like you.

Dehydration is a serious issue. She should speak to her doctor or dietitian to help her come up with a plan for foods (also keeping the grams of protein in the range they prescribed) and liquids.
Little sips of liquids throughout the day add up to quite a bit at the end of the day. Maybe she can try sugar free flavorings in her water (I am not a big plain water fan myself, those help me).

I am not a fan of plain water either. I am 1 year post op but when I was 3 weeks post-op I was still on a full-liquid diet which basically consisted of protein shakes, strained soups, sf jello, sf popsicles, milk, no added sugar applesauce, sf pudding. I did eat cheese but it was more like sucking on it until it dissolved. It wasn't until I hit 4 weeks post-op that I was allowed pureed foods. The key to that was to add gravy or any type of liquid. At 6 weeks post-op I was allowed soft food as long as I chewed very well. If I didn't it would hurt.

The most important thing for your mom to focus on is getting in enough fluids and protein. If you have any type if kitchen timer that can go off every 10 minutes to remind her to take a sip, not a gulp. Gulping can fill you up with air and be uncomfortable. If you let the liquid slide down the back of the throat that's even better.

Have her drink Crystal Lite -flavored or Mio-flavored water.

Use a timer - have her sip every 5 minutes or 3 minutes or 10 minutes -- whatever is comfortable for her.

If she gets too dehydrated, she'll have to have IVs to rehydrate her body.

I would get her off of cheese -- I think that's a little hard on her new tummy. I like the mashed potatoes idea.

Put her back on shakes if she's not drinking those anymore. They're hydration AND protein AND some good vitamins.

Has she tried powerade zero or isopure drinks? I'm only 10 days post op and I find these go down a lot easier than water. My surgeon always said after the surgery if I can't handle something wait a week and try again. My understanding is there is a ton of swelling in there and it takes awhile to go fully away. Also how about some cheese in her eggs? Or spices to change it up?

I just read this and Im wondering how your mom is doing?? Has she taken any supplements? I went on the bariatric website and ordered supplements including iron. All chewables. Please keep us posted on her!!

Thanks again everyone she is doing better he water intake has improved she's now back to work so she is not so light headed I found her some good soup recipes that's helped since she hates sweets. Overall doing better she loves the blog that was shared on here to :-) I'll be posting some photos soon can't figure out how it won't except my files on my phone?
