Default Why such high goal weights?

I am wondering why people have goal weights that leave them in the BMI range of obesity.
I have seen some women whose goal weights were 190-200lbs. Some men have goal
weights of close to 300lbs. This cannot be a healthy weight.
    I am 187 and I feel gross.
I am sure that after being over 250lbs or higher that 190 sounds good.
Not sure if the surgeon gives you the goal weight or because you want to be realistic??

My goal, which I made, was to be in the normal BMI range. My surgeon, however, had to give me the statistics that sleeve patients typically lose an average of 60% to 70% of their weight at 12 months.

I'm an "older" sleever, in my late 50's, so I think if I can do it, anyone can!

I'm at the high end of the normal range. Maybe I should try for the middle of the range, I don't know, I think I'll just wait and see what happens. I would be perfectly happy to maintain where I am for life.

Sraebaer has it just right. Mine was based on the average weight loss for a sleeve patient which would NOT put them in the healthy BMI category. Most of us want that, but statistically the majority will not achieve it. Once I hit my doctors goal for me, I changed my goal to one of my own choosing. Good luck.

Because those charts are not accurate. They don't take muscle into account with BMI. According to those charts my BMI at my goal weight(which incidentally was less than I weighed in HS and I was not fat at all then) still have me in the "Obese" category. I'm not worried about a label to be honest. I am going for a weight I know I will be comfortable at which is 170. Those charts want me to be 148 just to be in "normal" range and that is way too thin for me.

Bottom line go with what you know YOU will feel comfortable with. Don't let a chart dictate that to you. I wish you the best of luck in your journey!

PS---If a guy is say 6'6 and he feels comfortable at 300 then that's his choice. I was 320 and it was not fun for me or even comfortable. Doing anything was a chore even something as simple as walking up a flight of stairs as sad as that sounds or tying your shoes and not having to sit somewhere first.

When I met with my exercise consultant (a few months ago?) she did a muscle mass test on me that indicated I am "bonier and already more muscular" than the average 5'5" woman, especially women of my age (68). She suggested that 162 would be a good maintenance goal weight for me.

I totally understand that BMI charts are just averages, not prescriptions for everyone.

On the other hand, I haven't been 150 in for freakin' ever. Hence, my goal of 150 (see below). In other words, I would like to wear a size 10.

Last comment ... size 10s (and all the other sizes) are a whole lot bigger than they used to be. (Sigh)

    Just sayin'.

Good subject. My Dr told me to get down to 150. I think that is way too skinny, but he made allowances for muscle mass, and he would revise it as I increase my muscle mass. I am trying to have a slight ripped look, not sure if I want it to be sharp yet. I'm in the process of finding another doctor since I just moved, so I hope I find one compatible with me again.

My stomach is still a mess. I'm dropping weight, but my stomach is still being resistant to decreasing in size. The skin is firming also. My last Dr told me to wait 2 years before thinking about a tummy tuck. He said a whole lot more will be absorbed then I think. I'm in awe of the amount of skin that has disappeared... where did it go!!!!

Whats so cool is when I lay down, my stomach sits a good 4 inches below my chest Now If I can just freeze frame it when I sit up! lol

This is a really good question and I wondered the same thing; the answers make a lot of sense. I'm really short (5'1) and according to the charts I should weigh around 118 lbs.......Nope. I actually really like the way I look at 150 lbs. I could wear 6s and 8s and that was small enough for me. I need my curves.

Kindle, you are absolutely right. But, keep in mind, that being overweight all of our lives, as our self esteem increases, so does our desire to look good. I think its only natural to want that. Yes, definitely my health was the primary reason, the looking good part is an extra benefit. The haters will always be haters about something. Let them be... If someone wants a face lift or a boob job, who cares? Thats none of there business, and it doesn't make sense to even care about it.

Personal opinion here: WLS choices don't have dichotomous "right" and "wrong" motivations.

I want to be healthy. I want to look attractive. I FEEL physically healthy when I look attractive. I FEEL attractive when I am physically healthy. I FEEL mentally healthy when I am physically healthy and attractive.

My WLS, weight issues and potential benefits are bundled.

My goal may seem high to you but it is the lowest weight I have ever been at since I was 16 years old. It is a weight where I feel comfortable and healthy. I have spent a good part of my life over 300 pounds. I hope you don't judge others negatively. I am also trying to be realistic in my expectations. thanks.

I agree with you, but 100 pounds down is the common weight loss with this surgery. Keep in mind some start at a larger amount then you have. 350 to 250 is a drastic change. Being under 200 sounds like a pipe dream starting from that kind of weight. I'm sure as they reach their initial goal, they will revise it again. My initial goal was 180, and I realized that dropping to 165 would be better once I've been at 180 for a while. You are stunning at 187, so it would be awesome to see you at your desired weight of 135

My exact point Thanks! But personally, I'm sure you will revise it once you are comfortable at 175

@LORAW, you are such a cutie and you have gorgeous hair! Some will go by pounds on the scale, others by clothing size. Personally, I'm happy when my thighs no longer have a meet & greet with every step I take! Lol! I think women especially, have that magic number in their minds where they felt at their best. For some that'll coincide with the chart recommendations, other times it will not. Even if I got down to my high school weight, my body is never going to look like it did at that original weight. I'd much prefer to even be 160 lbs with nicely sculpted lean muscles, than to be 118 lbs and have someone offer me a sandwich or rehab. Go with how you feel, how your overall health is, and adjust from there if need be.
