    Default Thyroid

So I just recently found out I have a Hypo Thyroid which makes me use energy and burn calories slower...so that explains the extremely slow weight loss. I think this may have been brought on by the medication I take, Lithium. Has anyone else experienced these issues and if so what has your doctor prescribed or what have you altered in your diet and daily life to better your situation to get back on track with loosing weight?

When you have hypothyroidism, your doctor prescribes a thyroid medication, e.g., levoxyl or something similar. The amount s/he prescribes depends on how under-functioning your thyroid has become. The medication should improve your effective metabolic level.

This is a pretty common condition. I've been taking thyroid medication for nearly 40 years. Two of my sisters have the same condition.

Completely agree with Ann, once you are on a thyroid medication you should see things improve. I think it takes about 4-6 weeks to have a steady dose in your body. I've been on medicine for 24 years, you will be A-ok!

I have a slow thyroid as well. My surgery was June 9th and I have only lost 25 it has been going very slow. So I just focus on my water and protein and exercising.
I have been on synthroid since my mid 20's it takes a while to find the correct dose so just keep up with blood test.

I have no thyroid. Had to have mine removed. When I did I gained 40 pounds in 3 months barely eating. And never lost it. That was the biggest reason for the surgery. Even on a low cal, low carb diet I'd only lose 1/2 pound a week.

So I am curious if my weight loss will be slow or not after GS. I suspect it will be slower than most, especially after a few weeks, but we will see. Hope I'm wrong.

I also have no thyroid and since the surgery my levels have been all over the map. My weight loss has been very slow, my surgery was May 8 and I have lost 33 lbs. This may not sound to bad however I read a post yesterday and this women was 4 months out and had lost something like 60 lbs. I will never reach 60lbs in 4 months. Not much I can do about it, but at least I'm losing and I just keep focusing in on that, and you should too. Besure to follow up with you Doctor as he is requesting, the better control you have over the levels I think the better you will do.

No thyroid either, removed at age 16.......I've lost 38 lbs since surgery which was 9 1/2 weeks ago....55 total so it can happen! However I think it's based on a few things 1) starting weight 2) how long you've been on meds......my opinion only but we will all get to our goal weights eventually!!!!

yep - it isn't a race, and as long as I can get the scale moving down consistently, I will be happy. Well, maybe if I only lose 2 pounds a month I would not be, but if I can lose 5-10 each month, I think I would be pleased (more pleased toward the higher end).

My thyroid has been shot for 13 years. I was taking 157 synthroid (or whatever the generic is this week) and 13 of cytomel. Had my 4 month bloodwork come back a little off and they lowered the synthroid to 125. I don't think it always means slow weight loss, but best to have it checked. Good luck!
