    Default I cannot eat!!!!

Hi everyone. I am 5 weeks out of my surgery and I find really hard to eat and drink even my protein shakes. I hate meal time and snack time. I am worried I have an eating disorder. I feel full very easily. My doctor and nutritionist told me I can eat everything now giving priority to the protein but it is a nightmare.
I feel full, and psychologically I have zero desire to eat.
    Thanks for your help.

Hi there. I'm truly worried about u. U must eat. U had the surgery to improve your health. I'm only 2weeks out, but I have known people to really get ill from not getting the proper nutrients n their body. Please take measures to get some food in especially the ones that provide protein n vegetables. Take care, Angie

I'm only 5 days out. In my past I wanted protein shakes frozen. But the past few days since surgery, I use the blender to mix skim, protein powder, benefiber and maybe a mix in like pb2. It's easier to stomach this way. I have no appetite yet, but I know that I need to work on getting my protein to 60g and my liquids to 48-64oz ASAP. Every day I get a bit closer. By Monday, my goal is to meet it every day. I know my health and WL depends on it.

Go slow. I know I'm not on full foods, eat whatever till 8 weeks. So maybe you're going to fast. But at least get your protein and liquid in.

    Good luck!

    linvarbe,

First, welcome to the forum. It's a good place for support and education.

Perhaps it's time you sought the support of a counselor / psychologist / psychiatrist ... ? It sounds like you're worried enough about this that you need some informed feedback about some questions you have. We can support you, but we can't assess any psychological challenges you're having.

However, from what I know about nutrition (after a lifetime of dieting) I know that if you're not getting enough nutrition and if you're dehydrated, you will certainly feel terrible - physically, mentally and emotionally.

At this point, you have to shoulder the responsibility of eating whether you want to or not. The first few months of this experience are notoriously emotional for some people. The physical changes caused by surgery can cause some patients' hormones to fluctuate wildly.

Please seek the support of your doctor and other resources you need to get on an even keel.

Hi... I had a slightly different prob in that I couldn't eat until 8pm and then could eat anything. I do think you need yo force yourself - and try something new! Your taste buds are prob sick to the back teeth of protein shakes - maybe some egg or cereal - I'd say ANYTHING to try get appetite back. Mine sorted itself out but only because I had to force myself to eat a tablespoon of porridge for breakfast and it kick started my appetite for the day!!
Hope you find some way to get through this - I forced myself to as knew I needed protein or my hair loss would be terrible!! Ann is right - dietician prob good person to help you past this phase - but know that you will get through it!! Keep us informed x

Get some isopure to get your protein in, not cheap but each bottle has 40 grams of protien.

drink your shakes slowly. Tried different ones? that might help a little. I,too had a hard time eating. I was told that if it persists I should go back to my doc. But it didn't. At least, the part where I found it actually troubling to eat went away. I still had a tough time eating enough. Still do. But isn't that part of the reason we did this? Just make sure to get your protein in. What I did was to fill a bottle with protein shakes and take sips every few minutes. Just measure out how much protein you need for the day in the morning and make yourself sip away at it all day. Eventually you'll find it easier. IT might also help to schedule your meals for every 2-3 hours and just make yourself eat something. Don't mistake me, I'm not saying to eat past the full mark and throw it all up, but eat something. Like a piece of low-fat string cheese, I eat those slowly and divide them into strings.
