Question Starting my 21 day pre op diet, Surgery is July 21

Hi, so i am starting my preop diet today, and i am so excited. the next 21 days are going to be brutal, when i diet i get soooooooooooo cranky, and my diet looks real slim...lol my mom said, 'God help us all'...lol but i have support and all that so im feeling positive.
my question is, for those of you who have done the whole 21 days, high BMI, how did it go? did you eat Salad, if so how much did u have, could you eat lots or just a tiny bit? could you have fruit? like a banana or apple. if i cant thats fine, but i want to know if i can have an apple on days that i just need that little bit more, what about popcorn, air popped, no butter or salt? please give advice

this is my directive, but i have read that other ppl have gotten to eat a bit
Please find the diet on this email.

    One week prior to surgery:
Please stop taking any blood thinners, aspirin, and/or vitamins that you normally take (doctor prescribed medicines are fine if you are not sure, please call us).

    Three days prior to surgery:
Please take a laxative (1 laxative, 1 time, 3 days before surgery). This will help with the surgical gas and constipation that comes with surgery.
You will need to be on a liquid ONLY diet. You may have broth, Jell-O, yogurt, sugar-free juice, any clear liquid
Boost, or Slim-Fast. NO SOLIDS of any kind. . This is the recommended pre-op diet for those with a BMI of 40 or below.
PLEASE NOTE: A higher BMI requires a liquid diet 5-7 days prior to surgery.

The length of your pre op diet depends on your BMI. Your BMI is 56.

    25-35 3 Days
    36-40 5 Days
    41-45 7 Days
    46 or higher 21 days

Diets for Sleeve & Lap-Band Patients

Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner should be low calorie protein shakes or Non fat yogurt.
The rest of the day or if you are still hungry at meal time you can have clear liquids.
You should drink about 8 glasses of water or more a day.
And Jell-O the low calorie kind is a clear liquid.
Other clear liquids are beef and chicken broth, apple and grape juice, nonfat milk, and cranberry juice.
*For those patients Diabetic or if you really feel you need to have something solid, Dr recommends a small portion of plain grilled chicken or white fish and a green salad with lemon juice or vinegar and oil.
    Night prior to surgery
NOTHING to eat or drink after midnight

    Couple of comments ...

Do you know why you are doing the pre-op diet? If not, then here's the answer: It's mainly to shrink the size of your liver, which at a BMI of 56 (if I understood your post above) is very large at this point. The reason your liver needs to be shrunk is so the surgeon can move it over and operate on your stomach (underneath).

I'm assuming your diet must last 21 days because your liver will take that long to be reduced sufficiently in size to perform the surgery. Yes, it's tough to go that long on the pre-op diet, but you're hurting no one but yourself (and your surgeon) if you start negotiating with the diet s/he gave you.

See, here's the thing -- this isn't a diet to lose weight, but to do something very different. So if you "cheat" and eat carbs of any kind (including fruit) you're just going to have a liver that is that much bigger than the surgeon judges s/he can work with.

Good luck to you. You can do this. You've got to start sometime. And it seems it's now time for you to start.

    Isn't Mio great?

I truly love it. Discovered it several years ago. If they find out later that it causes cancer, I'm dead!

    LOL!

Kool Aid has a similar product - orange, cherry, grape - the flavours of youth!!!
Be the change you wish to see in the world. (Not Gandhi's exact words, but close enough)
