    Default Back Pain & VSG

I know that back pain is mostly a given with a lot of overweight people.
I have Spondylolisthesis, Parrs Defect x2 and Scoliosis. With these conditions comes degenerative disc disease, sciatica and A LOT of pain. Here is where it's a catch 21. Because of the excess weight and the back pain, I have a hard time exercising and simply walking and because I cannot exercise, I cannot lose the necessary weight to have te back problems fixed.
I'm wondering if anyone out there has had relief of symptoms/pain after they've lost the excess weight. I am also wondering what exercises you did at the start of your exercise program.
At present, walking causes extreme pain and I often have to stop just a few minutes into a walk.
Swimming is probaly the best exercise for me but I do not have access to a lap pool and I am not planning on joining a gym.
Any help would be grately appreciated.
    Thanks,
    D

Sorry to hear you are going through this. I have experienced back pain, but not at the level you are talking about. The reason I have responded is that a some people have more back pain after surgery and I am one of them. It's better now, but for the first couple of months it was much worse. The general thought with over sleevers and my doctor, is that you lose weight so fast that you also lose muscle. When that happens and you don't have any support issues in your back, you might not notice the problem. When you have back issues already, losing some muscle in your back just makes the situation worse. I think the fix is when you get surgery, you have to be very careful about getting your calories up above starving levels very quickly and also keep your protein levels high. Just my two cents. Make sure you work with your PCP and your surgeon and let them know your concerns.

After the 3rd month I really did notice an improvement though. Good luck.

    Thanks!
I also have Diastasis Recti - which is a seperation of the abdominal muscles - caused by my beautiful 3 y/o twin boys. THIS, causes the lack of core strength needed to help alleviate some of the back pain.
I'm just one big hot bag of mess! LOL

    Hi,

I have had 3 back surgeries and in 2011 I was diagnosed with Chronic Back Pain. I have been on some kind of narcotics since 2009. Name them and I have probably been on them. I was sleeved Mar 2013 and I could not exercise at all due to the severity of my pain. In fact I was advised not to until my weight was done at least 80-100 pounds. My back pain has lessened since losing extra weight and I am now off narcotics except for here and there when I have a flare. However while my back pain was decreased, I still walk with a cane and will most likely have chronic pain the rest of my life. It sucks, I hate it but I have learned to accept it. I walk but cannot handle any other high intensity exercise. I am starting YOGA next week as I have finally been cleared by a doctor to start strengthening my core. Hope this helps!
