Default "Eating" with Colleagues - early on after surgery

    Hi everyone,

I have alot of working lunches and dinners with colleagues and clients. Whereas a few months after I'm sleeved, I imagine I can eat fairly normally, just small portions and very slow, so what I'm doing isn't very noticeable to others. But I'm wondering about the meals before then? I can "eat" in my office initially, but I definitely have times where there are working lunches. I'll be drinking my food then!

Any suggestions on how to manage this? There are only two people at work who know what I'm doing. I don't want to call attention to myself or be a distraction to other things (work and conversations) going on.

    Thanks!

Tell them you had a big breakfast or that you are craving soup.

You are just on a diet, no big deal. Don't worry about this stuff, most people will see you losing the weight and just be happy for you and they will expect you to eat differently.

Been there. The funny thing is it's the waitress that often makes the big deal of how little I ate.

Since everyone saw me loosing weight they knew my diet had changed. It really was not much of an issue.

in the end very few people realize what you eating at all. that being said here are some ways i combated. i work in corp and food seems to be involved a lot in sales. the worst time was at a very expensive customer 5 course fancy dinner. we had a big customer dinner with like 5 courses. i kept having to excuse myself after each one. it was a very difficult night for me. that was the only time i had that issue and it was like 60 days post opp. the next time i was faced with this type of thing - i realized the group was drinking a lot. they prob were at the first one too but anyways. after the group had a couple of wines no one really noticed at all. the drinking was a bit annoying but it made the courses go really slow so i could get in a bit at a time. the other working lunch events - if at a restaurant order something smallish and only ate what i could of it. concentrating on the protein. the ones where they bring in food and you sit and work and eat - you can get your plate and mostly people are working and not paying attention. at that point if they brought in sandwiches i would choose like a tuna or soft meat and only eat that. sometimes at my work - they bring in lunch and its like a break and people scatter back to desks to get in a little bit of work on their own. those are perfect bc no one realizes what you are eating at all. at those just eat your food / shake that your brought. you can always say i have a little work at my desk etc. or a famous one for me - i have to make a customer call or make an urgent call. my dietician helped in a lot of these situations in that she didnt let me rely on liquid foods for too long. it was slow going but eventually all the items at a dinner i could eat but just smaller qtys. its been several years now almost 3 and i eat i think like a skinny girl would. so not apparent to anyone.

I think the waitresses worry that there was something wrong with the food when they see 3/4 not being eaten.

I told them I was doing a sugar detox diet. That seemed to satisfy them. To the couple of folks that asked for more detail like they wanted to do it too I told them I was working with a doctor and a nutritionist and they shouldn't do it without medical supervision. That kept the quiet. But honestly, most folks didn't even ask.

Thanks everyone! After reading your responses I realize this isn't as big of a deal as I thought. Great ideas and the bottom line is most people won't notice.
