    Default Pre-Op Sucks!

So I have exactly 13 days until the big day and have started on Optifast over the weekend. IT SUCKS! I am miserable and just want to eat everything in sight. I can't stand the taste of most of the shakes or bars - the only one i can kind of tolerate is the chocolate shake but even that makes me gag as I'm drinking it.

Is it normal to be this down and depressed? The headaches and dizziness is out of control - I knew it would happen detoxing from all the crap I ate but knowing it and going through it are two completely different things. I still have nearly 2 weeks to get through and don't know if I can do it. Being around the office and smelling all these yummy lunches makes me crazy. Everywhere I turn there is food tempting me.

How did you guys get through it and does it get any easier??

As JessG stated by day 5 it does get better, much better! Day 2-4 I was ready to choke anyone, but I'm still here so obviously that didn't happen! But it will get better I promise!

    Keep going and good luck!

Thank you both. I'm going to bed early tonight and hopefully tomorrow will be a little better. I didn't realise how much food was all around me until I couldn't have it anymore,

It is interesting how different doctors have different requirements. My doctor here at Tufts in MA wants her patients on a liquid diet for only 2 days prior to surgery not 2 weeks.... Good luck to you. Hope today is a little easier to bare.

I changed my diet 2 months prior so my pre-op wasn't a terrible shock to me but yes, I was hungry a lot on it. I just kept telling myself, only xx number of days left. I can do anything for xx number of days.

I can completely relate. I am on day 2 of my 14 day preop. I feel like my head will explode and am miserable. Yesterday, my first day on this, I went to bed at 630 pm because I felt so miserable! Lord give me strength to make it through this! Good luck to you, I'll keep my fingers crossed for both of us that day 5 proves to be better.

I am on my 8th day of the pre-op and I can promise you, it does get better. I was really weak, had bad headaches and was really moody and hungry. I started drinking more water and things improved a lot. It takes a lot of patience though and yes, going to bed early and sleeping helps. Stay busy and focus on the reason you are doing this. I have six more days but three of them are liquids only so hoping I can get through that too!

Thank you guys, it's amazing that everyone has different pre-op instructions. I think it also depends on your starting size. I was told i need to do it for 2 weeks in order to shrink my liver enough so they will have easier access to my stomach and reduce complications.

It's a struggle but I keep trying to think about life after this. I'm now on day 4 - the headache is numbing which is a positive but the food cravings are the worst! Even foods I don't like seem tempting at the moment. I guess that's normal?

You've all just confirmed what my husband has been nagging me about. Even though I don't start my preop diet until the 27th, my husband keeps telling me I need to start cutting out the bad stuff now so the pre-op won't be so bad. But there are so many foods I need to say goodbye too! I guess I should start taking his advice....but don't tell him I said that!

In all seriousness, I hope it gets better for you.

I had the same idea in mind, and did try to cut it out a month earlier. But because I knew I could still cheat - that is what I did! I wish I had the will power to stick it out earlier! Good luck to you too!

Yes it does and it really is the worst part of the whole process. The other thing that is sort of a bummer is the weight you lose on the pre op doesn't count towards the weight you lose post surgery. They weigh you on surgery day and THAT'S the weight they use for you starting weight. I lost 13 lbs. pre op but then again who can really complain a loss is a loss and it's a whole heck of a lot better than a gain. Hang in there kiddo. It will get better. I didn't start feeling better until about 6 weeks post op. So don't get discouraged. It is pretty cool afterwards when you feel full on 2 oz's of protein at a meal and no longer suffer hunger pangs.

You can do it. Keep your eye on the prize. I had my surgery yesterday and am so glad I roughed it out to be done with it now.
