    Default Struggling

    Hi guys

I had my gastric sleeve 11 weeks ago. So far I have lost 49 pounds. But it has been a real struggle. Three weeks in and I started throwing up I got really dehydrated and then ended up in the emergency room and hospitalized for 24 hours. Since then it's been really hard to swallow keep food down extreme nausea and pain. CT was negative. The surgeon did a scope and dilated my Esophagus. We did an ultrasound and saw that My gallbladder had sludge and stones. All my labs are off I'm anemic I'm malnourished I haven't eaten properly in in 7 weeks. I'm living on proteins shakes and chicken soup and don't ever meet goal. I had surgery on Monday to remove the gallbladder and look at the sleeve. The surgeon said the sleeve look good and he removed the gallbladder and then I had to have a blood transfusion Due to the anemia but I still can't eat and he's giving me two weeks or he says he's going to move to the bypass bc I am going to die eventually cause I'm not eating. Has anyone else had this experience? He did say potentially that my stomach could be paralyzed due to a nerve being cut during surgery.

    Thanks Jemma

Oh no! I'm really sorry to hear about this. I actually didn't know this could happen until I looked up stomach paralysis (gastroparesis). I'm thinking this is not a very common side effect, so you would be that rare statistic we hear of. I can't imagine what you're going through, but thank you for bringing this information to the forum. It's one more thing people should understand they risk before selecting WLS. I really hope your doctors will be able to find a solution for you that will alleviate your distress. You're in my thoughts. Please let us know how you fare in the end.

Hoping for you that this is your sleeve being very inflamed due to your gallbladder issues and not gastroparesis.
I had something similar happen at 11 months out when my GB started acting up. It took 6 mo to get it out and a year afterward I'm still suffering with chronic gastritis and mild gastroparesis.
Has any doc given you thoughts on nutritional help for digesting easier?
I was in very bad shape until I saw a naturopath who gave me chewable digestive enzymes, chewable acidophiles and marshmallow root tea.
The tea is incredibly soothing when you drink it lukewarm. I essentially drink it all day long. Take some enzymes and acidophiles each time you eat anything, to help it break down and digest. I use "Quick Digest" enzymes - most natural food sections of groc stores have it or on amazon. It's papaya, amylase, and bromelain. Truly it has saved me. Eating without it is hours of pain. Essentially you need to do whatever you have to in order to give your sleeve a chance to heal. Helping whatever you eat digest easier can help do that. And hey, that chicken soup? Is it Unjury? at least then you'd get some protein in it....
    wishing you well

    Wow Jemma

This is quite sobering, the other side of this surgery and its rare side effects. I send my thoughts and very best wishes across the oceans to you and hope you are running around smiling and chirpy quickly.

I guess we put a lot of trust into our well trained surgeons and know that behind the scenes they are networking for great outcomes for us all.

I feel your pain. I'm nauseous all the time and don't feel like eating. I live on SF pops. They are cold and soothing to my stomach. But I can't live on those or I'll die. Please post an update and let us know how you are doing.
