    Default Binge eating...

I am starting to see some of my binge eating starting to return. It scares the crap out of me. I know what to do to counter attack but am struggling to do the right thing. Also I have family staying with us and am having a hard, terrible time trying to get them not to bring bad food in the house. Has anyone post-op seen some binging behaviors returning??

    MY JOURNEY

I'm 5 1/2 months post op and I have not experienced cravings or binge eating. I haven't re-introduced bad carbs (sugar, chips, cookies, bread, pasta, rice, etc) back into my diet which has made my old cravings for bad things non-existent. I can only eat about 5-6 bites of anything before I get the full feeling so binge eating isn't something I could even consider.
My weight at start of my 2 week pre-op diet was 232
My weight on the morning of surgery was 221

I have to avoid all junk foods like the plague. They don't fill me up and are dangerous because they r really just empty calories. I was eating goldfish crackers just last night and I'm like why am I even eating these? They don't even taste good. Avoid avoid avoid

I can certainly relate to what you are going through. I had gastric sleeve in August 2013 and my weight prior to surgery was 276. I'm at 209 right now and holding.

I can eat anything I like and never get sick (sometimes a little nauseous). What I consider a binge now is not like anything before surgery -- but a binge now is a couple handfuls of potato chips, or 3 cookies, or a scoop of ice cream, or a small slice of cake. I guess that's why I've only lost 67 pounds.

So it does scare me--because I realize that I could still eat a bag of Oreos if I wanted--- it would just take me all day nibbling on that bag. Before surgery I could put that same bag of Oreos and a cup of milk away in about 45 minutes (i'm not kidding).

I get scared because I can't seem to get rid of those old sneaky hunger pains. I still crave McDonalds (although 1/2 regular hamburger and 1/2 small fries is all I can eat).

I exercise like crazy so that is helping to build muscle and I suppose keep the pounds from coming back on. I've been thinking about eating behavior therapy to see if I can stop the eating of so called processed and junk foods. I think it's purely emotional eating-- I feel good when I eat these foods.
But I also feel good when I exercise and have a good of eating right. I feel good when I try on a 16W pair of pants (I just bought my first 16W Suit). That's down from a 24W.

So I do totally get it and am struggling to get through. Today I've eaten well except for a handful of dry cereal and a handful of Lays potato chips. Otherwise right on track.

So I hope this helps some--

I have (seen some binging behaviors return). It started at Christmas. Until then I hadn't had a single bite of unclean food. I knew I shouldn't do it, I'd screwed up before during a pre-sleeve Christmas 4 years ago. I had been eating sugar-free and feeling fab. I was baking Christmas cookies and thought, Aw... one won't hurt. Next thing I knew, it was almost April and I was still downing sweets hand over fist. This last Christmas, I dunno why I thought I could handle a Christmas treat of one Cherry Mash candy. I told myself it was better than the entire chocolate orange I usually had. Then once again, I'm back on the junk trying desperately to get back on the wagon.

At my WLS support group tonight there were people who said eating sweets and junk food made them incredibly sick. I wish I was like that. Unfortunately, I have yet to eat a food that made me sick, fortunately I cannot eat a lot of what I can eat, but I am pushing it. It scares the crap outta me too, and I am struggling every freakin day. I'm so sick of this sh*t.

I have days where it seems that no matter what I eat I want to eat more and more. I am afraid of my binge eating habits on these days because the foods I crave are the ones that do not fill you up. I have noticed that it's similar to when I gave up caffeine that if I can withhold succumbing to these urges for either a day or two that the feeling eventually goes away and the next time I eat a meal I fill up quicker and it lasts longer. But sometimes you still want that handful of chips or those couple of cookies. When I'm craving something salty/sweet/crispy (which is what I go to on these days) I try to stick to nuts, either pecans or cashews or honey roasted peanuts. These (in my opinion) don't break my diet bank as much as the chips/cookies do and I don't feel as guilty if I have a handful or two of these because there is a fair amount of protein to be found in them .

I tend to want to binge right before my period. I still have all the cravings I use to pre-op and it scares me too. BAD! Sometimes I can control myself and some days are not so great.
I also can not have any junk food in the house especially during that time.
I have been trying more flavored herbal teas. I tend to have my worst cravings at night. I am finding if I have a few cups of decaff flavored hot tea it helps with my cravings and I sleep better at night.

    Boy, THAT is the truth!

For me (we're all different) what works to get me back on the straight and narrow (which I LOVE) is to:

    1. Journal everything I eat, drink, and step (MyFitnessPal works great for me).

    2. Get the "bad stuff" out of the house. Maybe you could put the relatives' bad stuff in a locked cabinet? Or get the relatives out of the house, too!

    3. If you really do have a problem with food binging, I would SERIOUSLY get myself into actual therapy / counseling about those behaviors. This is probably NOT about your will power.

    4. Make lists of what I will gain by becoming healthy - and the dreck in my life I'll lose by becoming healthy.

And great first step! I think you've done a brilliant thing by starting this thread.

I am waiting for insurance approval for surgery but I do have binge eating history. Is there something that is triggering your Bing eating post op is there a trigger or just come on you for no reason. This is a big worry for me when entering into the post op world
