500lb and looking for a dr.

Hi I am looking for a dr. In Mexico for my brother. I suggested he go to the Dr. That I went to but they said he would have to lose at least 100lb. Does anyone know a dr. In mexico that does the vertical sleeve surgery on people that weight? Thank you

I do not know about Surgeons in Mexico. At my highest documented weight of 457 lbs was worried my options were limited. However, I quickly learned that was not the case. My BMI was 59,8 and instantly approved through my insurance. That said, does your brother want WLS or is this something you are wanting for him? If this is something he wants, I suggest he look for a Bariatric Center Of Excellence (COE).

In addition, the pre-op diet requirement/duration will vary by patient's BMI, age, surgeon's experience, and other factors. My pre-op diet was to be for three weeks and I was asked to lose at least 25 lbs. As I wanted to ensure my best chances for success, I worked with my medical team to start 2 weeks early for 5 weeks on the pre-op diet. I lost 62 lbs prior to surgery.

My brother wants it but now he basically is giving up on the surgery. He said if he could lose 100lb on his own he wouldn't need te sirgery.. I was just trying to help him.

I would recommend my doctor. Dr. Jose Rodriquez, I went thru a company called Beliteweight, they helped me with all the questions, and found the correct doctor for me. My coordinator was "Ishi" and she was great! They even have financing. You can look at it on Beliteweight.com they have surgeons here in the states and in mexico, but mexico was a lot more affordable for me. Good luck! You are welcome to PM me if you like.

Dr. Ortiz and Dr. Curiel they work out of Mi Hospital. There is a facebook group called A Lighter Me (2014) someone just responded to a question like this and said they were over 500lbs and got the surgery. Hope that helps

It all depends on your BMI, your brothers height and weight, and if you can't visit a dr. in TJ before surgery, they can Skype with you and ask your primary doctor for you medical history...if you need more info..feel free, I did mine in TJ and it went great.

I assume he is a high risk patient and regardless of who or where the surgery is performed go to a real full service hospital that is capable of rapid full service intervention equipped with 24/7 active ICU and ER.
There are two such hospitals in TJ area; Almater and Hospital Angeles.Mexico City and Guadalhara have JCI Certified hospitals also.
I am relaxing in my suite at Hospital Angeles 18 hours post op and have received a high level of care and the same new meds that would be dispensed in U.S. Hospital formularies like Aprepitant, Lovenox, narcotic analgesics and state of the anesthesia protocols/ meds.

Depending on his co- morbidities he might be better off closer to home at a Center of Excellence with an expertise in treating patients with very high BMIs
So my advice would be to thoroughly research these surgeons and facilities and consider but not solely rely on the advice on this and other websites.BTW, cost is one factor but obtaining the optimal treatment is very important.
