    Default Considering gastric sleeve surgery

    Hi
My name is Lisa. I am 50 years old. I am considering gastric sleeve surgery. Actually, I see the surgeon in 2 weeks and my insurance has already approved me. I am 5'2" and 205 lbs. I had back surgery 5 years ago and now have 3 bulging disc. I have arthritis in most joints, from feet to hands. So as long as I keep this weight on me I can not exercise. I am on high blood pressure meds. My thyroid meds help some, but not much.
At the same time I am scared. Not so much of the surgery, I have had plenty. More afraid of vomiting. My mom had stapling done, but that was in the early 80's. I think she was more of a guinea pig. They basically sent her home to find out on her own what she can and can not eat. She was sick daily.
So any advice would be great appreciated!!!

Hi Lisa and welcome. I can't speak for all as everyone is different but I had surgery 7/16/14 and have never thrown up or even felt at all like I was. I had some slight gas pain immediately after and walked right away and then that was gone. Honestly I believe some of it has to do with the anesthesia and if you have had surgeries then you know already how you tolerate that. Good luck to you!

    Hello Lisa ,
My surgery was 7/28 and the only nausea I experienced was one time when the nurse administered anti-nausea meds into my IV because I was about to eat , my stomach was completely empty and could not handle that ,make sure you get the ice chips or popsicle before you eat and you should be fine.

Hi Lisa, I had surgery 6 1/2 months ago and knock on wood, haven't thrown up once. I asked for anti-nausea meds with my anesthesia because I have had problems with anesthesia before. They gave me a patch to wear behind my ear and regular anti-nausea meds with my pain medicine. As for eating, I really have tried to eat slowly and measure my food so I don't eat too much. I think 2 times I felt like I took one bite too much. I immediately stopped eating and took a short walk. For me that helped.

Also, I no longer take the two blood pressure medicines and diabetic medications I needed previously. I had my blood sugar checked yesterday about 2 hours after I ate and it was 96!!!

The process my doctor/hospital have you go thru is a lengthy process for a reason. I feel all the steps really help prepare you to be successful. It's much different then the old days of weight loss surgery.

All should be fine, I know a few people who have had the sleeve and we have all gotten sick a couple times. In my case ii still drink my liquids just a little faster than I should. So much good come from this surgery, hell i would do it all over again even if told I'd be sick for a year. My life has gotten so much better, 10 fold. There's going to be some issues along the way but please dont let it scare you. You will not regret this decision. Best of luck and wishes my friend.

Mike- you honestly lost 70 lbs in a little over 2 months!! I was told to expect 10 lbs a month. But everyone here has lost a lot more then that. I am so thankful for your input, and the support from all of you. I do not think I am as scared now. I see the surgeon on Aug 15th. Wish me luck

    Lisa,

The speed of weight loss generally favors sleevers who are heavier to start with, younger people, people with no thyroid issues, people who aren't on drugs that slow down metabolism or weight loss, and (as it has always been and ever shall be) people who have penises.
