    Default Hungry

I'm hungry all the time. I have hunger pains & gurgling all the time. I am one month out from my surgery. I am tolerating foods, but I am starving. The doctor said I can't be hungry. I am miserable. Also, I can't seem to get a straight answer about whether or not I can have sugar with the gastric sleeve.

Our stomachs are numb for a time after surgery while staple areas heal I have been told. It may be that your stomach and head aren't talking properly yet or it may be the seriously restrictive diet we are forced to do prior and after so your body is probably hungry. I was not getting hunger cues but was pale pale white, felt like I was going to pass out and was freezing cold all the time with no energy so I started eating before I was suppose to and I felt better. Your body may need some fat or carbs, I am not a doctor so double check but I had regular fat cheese and have had some regular sugar. If you have too much sugar our bodies don't like it, I want to say its called dumping syndrome but its not as bad for sleeve as it is for bypass. Hope you start feeling less hungry soon.

After Surgery having too much sugary products can lead you too dump syndrome, cause sugar provide more calories then compare to normal meals.
If you had an surgery recently then you strictly follow the advice of your nutritionist or surgeon.

Sure you could have sugar, but it won't help with your weight loss. (There is nothing I can't eat.)

I was hungry after surgery. I found sometimes drinking water helped. I didn't have any problems with acid but that can lead to feelings of hunger. You're not alone. At 1 month I was still on liquid protein and it was killing me. I went to puree a week early, deciding to hell with what the doctor said. I felt a lot better after that.

As for sugar, you can have it however as sraebaer said it won't help your weight loss, but sugar in moderation won't hurt you. You have the right idea that you need to listen to your body. The sleeve doesn't cause dumping syndrome like bypass, but it will move through your sleeve faster. If you're looking to fill up, sugar isn't going to do it. I have a skinny cow chocolate almost every evening and I still lose between .3 and .5 lbs a day. You will learn what your body can do with sugar. Are you craving sugar right now? If so it might be a clue that you're not getting enough carbs. Despite some opinions, your body needs carbs and fats to survive, just like it needs protein. Water, protein, exercise are the keys. After that do what you need to in order to make the surgery work for you. Good luck and keep us posted.

Simple "No sugar" ! And you need to eat protein all the time or at least drink it!

If you had an surgery recently then you strictly follow the advice of your nutritionist or surgeon.

It would be impossible to quantify how much I disagree with the statement I highlighted above.

Especially your NUT. Unless your NUT has had a sleeve, or specializes in post op nutrition for sleevers, then I will tell you that the advice you are getting from a NUT is flawed. This is based on everything I have read about NUT's and their dietary blather vs. my own experience, and success, with being sleeved and losing weight.

First off, please understand that you cannot eat enough of what ever you consider to be bad for you to really matter. If you have a 100% sugar cookie, you'll still lose weight and your sleeve will not blow up or leak out of your navel or turn inside out.

I wrote a vine not too long ago about folks who do not have any experience giving out advice. It is ok to have an opinion, it is not ok to dispense advice about something that you have no experience with. It doesn't matter whether you are a NUT, a sleever who is less than 6 months post op, or someone who hasn't been sleeved yet. So, having said that, here is the mantra.

You are not on a diet.

Since you are not on a diet you cannot be failing at a diet.

    CARBS ARE YOUR FRIEND

Eat as much protein as your little peanut sleeve will allow.

Drink no less than 64 ozs of WATER a day.

You must never, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever over eat.

    Period.

Oh....and by the way. You can eat sugar. You will need to eat sugar sooner rather than later. Read my posts. Read the posts of those who tried my methods.

Then, decide for yourself and own your decision.

I like the protein drinks at BJ Bariatrics they are fruit flavored and it might make you feel fuller. At one month you can have alot of things that can fill you, ask your doc for a list, maybe they can email it to you if they haven't provided a book of some sort for you to go by. Good luck with your journey.

I second the advice above that if you are not on a PPI (omeprazole, Protonix, Prevacid, etc.) then it sounds like you may need one. Constant stomach gurgling + hunger after sleeve surgery is often fixed with a PPI. And if you are on a PPI, you may need a different one. Good luck!

I don't believe the "hunger pains & gurgling" are real hunger but simply the stomach doing it's job...digestion. Head hunger is really hard to learn. Good luck.

I thought I was starving. I thought the surgery must have not work or else why would I be so hungry? Then I read on here that heartburn can make you feel hungry. I went and got some prilosec and suddenly wasnt "hungry" anymore. For me, it was heartburn.

Oh, and sugar is not the devil. Our bodies need sugar. Our bodies need carbs. Like tinman said, your stomach won't blow up. If you are craving something sweet then listen to your body. Moderation is important though. But this is our life now and we can't obsess over every bite we put in our mouths. Feed your body what it needs.

This morning my stomach was much better so I opted to not take the acid pill. My thinking is I never had excess acid issues before so maybe it is forcing my stomach to produce so much acid to break even that's where the uber hunger pains were coming from. So far so good, I'm having a much better day today. I've had growls but hunger not attached to it.
